Chapter 162: Chapter 162: Overwhelmed by Favor
Victor Morgan: “It’s nothing. There was something dirty up ahead.”
Jessie Sterling: “???”
Just then, Lynn Jennings arrived. Seeing her, Victor Morgan finally removed the hand covering Jessie Sterling’s eyes and gave Lynn a slight nod.
Lynn Jennings was rather flattered by the gesture.
’After all, it seemed like every time I ran into Victor Morgan, it was never at a “good time.” It was either when I was out with Jessie looking for other men, or listening to other men sing.’
’Who would have thought there’d come a day when Victor Morgan would actually want me to distract Jessie?’
The moment Jessie Sterling heard Lynn Jennings’s voice, she completely forgot about Victor Morgan’s little “stunt.” She shrugged him off, linked arms with Lynn, and instinctively glanced at her friend’s belly. “Was my goddaughter well-behaved last night?”
Lynn didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She was still in her first trimester, so her belly wasn’t showing at all. The little bean sprout inside her was still just that—a little bean sprout. How could it be well-behaved or not?
“Your goddaughter is about the size of a soybean right now, and she’s being very quiet. We’ll have to wait a few more months before we can talk about her misbehaving.”
Jessie murmured, “Oh,” still finding the whole thing incredible.
“This afternoon, Victor and I are going to buy a gift for my goddaughter,” Jessie said. “Send me your current address later, and I’ll come find you tonight.”
Lynn Jennings: “You don’t have to spend money on that. Cyrus will get everything.”
“He’s the baby’s father, so of course he should. This is from me to my goddaughter, and I want to do it. Besides,” Jessie huffed, “it’s not for you. Are you rejecting it on my goddaughter’s behalf? Did she give you permission?”
’What else could Lynn say?’ She didn’t bother correcting Jessie’s use of “goddaughter.” Even though they couldn’t know the baby’s sex yet, deep down, she wanted a daughter too.
Lynn gently nudged Jessie with her shoulder. “Did you just say you and President Morgan are going to buy clothes for my little girl?”
“Yep.”
Lynn’s expression turned a little strange. “And President Morgan didn’t say anything?”
“What would he say?” Jessie asked, confused. But then it dawned on her. She pursed her lips, thinking about what Victor had said last night, and couldn’t help but smile. “Are you talking about the baby issue? Don’t worry. For now, that’s not a problem between us.”
Although Lynn didn’t know what Jessie and Victor had discussed, she was relieved to see that they seemed to be fine. She gave Jessie a thumbs-up.
“Impressive,” Lynn said.
’I really underestimated Jessie,’ she thought. ’I never expected she’d be able to handle a man like Victor Morgan so masterfully.’
In a marriage alliance like theirs, children were, of course, the top priority.
They weren’t just about producing an heir; they were also a key indicator of the marriage’s stability in the eyes of the public.
You could say that children were an important tool for projecting an image of stability.
Take the wedding today between Brianna Hudson and her older brother, for example. Lynn had heard her family say that Brianna was expected to get pregnant within six months.
The Jennings family’s situation was somewhat unique. After all, Jared was getting on in years, so the matter of a proper heir couldn’t be delayed. All that pressure now fell on Brianna Hudson.
Victor Morgan’s family situation wasn’t as complicated as her brother’s, but Victor himself wasn’t a spring chicken, either. The Morgan family was surely looking forward to a child from Jessie.
And yet, Victor had compromised for Jessie.
Neither the bride nor the groom at today’s wedding were particularly close to Jessie or Lynn, so the two were happy to slip away. They found a gazebo in a small outdoor park and started chatting privately.
Their spot was on high ground, offering a view of the sea in every direction.
The blue sky, white clouds, and azure water inexplicably lifted their spirits.
“Now that your older brother is married, I guess his position in the family business is secure, right?” Jessie asked bluntly, since it was just the two of them.
Lynn nodded. “With a wealthy backer like the Hudson family, plus the fact that my dad already wanted to hand the medical equipment division over to him… after Brianna officially married him, our family gave her company shares. It was in her name, but who doesn’t know what my dad was really up to? He was just bolstering my brother’s position.”
“So what are you going to do now?” Jessie asked, a little worried.
Lynn had already had a major falling out with her family when she’d jumped ship to a rival’s research institute.
It seemed unlikely she’d be able to reclaim her share of the family assets without a fight.
“I’m not in a rush. The most anxious person right now should be my second brother,” Lynn said with a smile.
Jessie had heard a bit about Mason Walsh’s recent activities.
“He still hasn’t settled down?”
Lately, Mason Walsh had been flitting about like a social butterfly, religiously attending every gathering in Southaven and Port Caldoria.
His intentions were easy to guess: he was just trying to find a partner who could outshine Brianna Hudson.
Money and power slowly expand a person’s appetite. Those who have more are never satisfied; they only want more.
Lynn might seem to have little competitive standing in the Jennings family right now, but she was the only one who was blood-related to everyone else. Jared naturally wouldn’t make things too difficult for her.
Mason Walsh, however, was a different story.
There was hardly any brotherly affection between him and Jared Jennings.
Jared had already secured the medical equipment division and looked down on Mason completely. Now, he was determined to get the pharmaceutical factory and the research institute as well.
How could Mason not be desperate?
Even Jessie, all the way in Aethelburg, had heard of Mason’s “glorious deeds.” One could only imagine the commotion he was causing.
No one said anything to his face, of course, but how could they not be talking behind his back?
You had to wonder if Mason himself knew he was becoming the laughingstock of their social circle.
People always talk about women being desperate to marry, but you rarely see a man as desperate to find a wife as Mason Walsh.
“How could he possibly settle down until he finds a suitable match?” Lynn pursed her lips in disdain. “I don’t know if it’s because he grew up without a father, but my mother always spoiled him, which is why he’s such a buffoon. The family had a rather embarrassing incident recently.”
Lynn had no qualms about airing her family’s dirty laundry in front of Jessie, so she spilled everything.
“So, my older brother invited a ton of people to his wedding today, right? Well, Mason wanted to be a groomsman. He probably figured it was a good chance for the groomsmen and bridesmaids to hit it off. Hahaha! So he brought it up to Jared a few times, dropping hints both subtle and obvious, but Jared wouldn’t take the bait. Finally, a few days ago, he couldn’t hold it in anymore and brought it up at a family gathering, right in front of our parents. And you’ll never guess what my brother said.”
