Chapter 188: Chapter 188: Delivering a Meal
Victor Morgan had no idea that Jessie Sterling was at home planning a surprise for him. After receiving her reply, he was lost in thought.
He hadn’t really been expecting anything when he messaged her.
But when he saw the cold, seemingly emotionless reply on his phone, Victor couldn’t help but overthink it.
’What should I do if my wife is too cold to me?’
He knew there was nothing wrong with Jessie’s reply; perhaps he was just asking for too much. But compared to such a professional response, he would have much preferred to see her act cute, or even throw a little tantrum and demand he come home to eat with her. Anything would have been better than this.
When Keegan Sanders knocked and entered, he found his boss completely spaced out.
Keegan was a little surprised. After all, it was rare for his boss to be so distracted during work hours.
He stood there for a moment, and when he realized his boss still hadn’t noticed him, he couldn’t help but clear his throat, finally catching Victor’s attention.
“President Morgan, this is the research report from Australia. Would you like to take a look?” Keegan stepped forward and handed Victor the printed documents, on which he had already highlighted the key points and items needing attention.
Victor grunted in acknowledgment and began to flip through them.
He read through the files quickly, pointing out a few vague approval conditions. “Investigate these thoroughly, then submit another written report.” He placed the documents on his desk, gesturing for Keegan to go and make the arrangements.
Keegan nodded and said, “Understood.” He didn’t leave right away. Instead, he looked at his boss and asked, “It’s almost dinnertime. What would you like to eat, President Morgan?”
Before Victor was married, working overtime at the company was the norm. Keegan knew his boss was a picky eater and always had a few choice restaurants ready for him to choose from.
Victor didn’t really have an appetite. “Don’t worry about me for now,” he said.
Only then did Keegan turn and leave.
Victor quickly buried himself in his work again, and the earlier moment of distraction seemed as if it had never happened.
Jessie Sterling left her courtyard home. This time, she didn’t try to be a hero and drive the food over herself.
It was rush hour, and she was afraid that before she even made it out of the winding alleyways of her neighborhood, the soups and sauces in the containers would have sloshed everywhere.
Aethelburg had countless side streets, and navigating them was a test of both driving skill and familiarity with the map.
So, she left a technical matter like this to the family driver.
About forty minutes later, Jessie arrived at the base of the Morgan Group headquarters.
In the height of summer, in this northern city near the coast, the sun had already set, but a brilliant red afterglow remained.
Today, for instance, the horizon looked as if it had been set ablaze, burning the white clouds. Red light seemed to seep out from them, like a piece of carnelian jade.
As the city lights began to twinkle on, many windows in the Morgan Group building and the surrounding towers were still lit.
White-collar workers, having just grabbed a bite to eat outside, were heading back to work overtime, making the office district still feel bustling.
Jessie entered the Morgan Group headquarters, and the summer heat was immediately shut out by the glass doors.
The lobby was bright, its floors polished so perfectly they could reflect a person’s image.
To go upstairs, one needed to swipe an employee ID card to access the elevators.
The receptionists were very professional. While they didn’t recognize every single person in the entire building by sight, they had a knack for sizing people up.
Jessie, who had just walked in, was wearing a comfortable, mint-green sundress with ruffled hems. The ZIMMERMANN style was unmistakable and quite memorable.
She hardly looked like she was there for work.
It was more like she had wandered onto the wrong movie set while on vacation.
What’s more, Jessie was carrying a thermal food container.
“Hello, miss. Is there anything I can help you with?” a receptionist asked, smiling warmly at Jessie.
She seemed even more enthusiastic than usual.
It couldn’t be helped. Who wouldn’t be a little happier upon seeing a beautiful woman? Just looking at her was enough to lift one’s spirits.
Jessie found the food container a little heavy. The driver had asked if she needed him to come in with her, but she had refused.
She was here to have dinner with Victor Morgan, so having the driver carry the container would have seemed a bit insincere.
Technically, the food had been delivered by a Maserati, so it wasn’t as if she had carried it all the way here. But for this final short distance, Jessie felt she needed to show off her “hard work” and “sincerity.”
Jessie placed the thermal food container—which had a retro, faux-woven design but was actually made of solid wood—on the reception desk. She shook out her slightly sore wrist and said, “I’m here to see Keegan Sanders.”
Of course, she wasn’t going to say she was here for Victor Morgan.
The surprise was her suddenly appearing before him, not having him come downstairs to get her.
“He should still be here, right?” Jessie asked again.
’After all, Victor is still working overtime. As his executive assistant, Keegan should be with him, right?’
The receptionists certainly knew who Keegan Sanders was.
If Jessie had asked for some random, ordinary employee, they might not have recognized the name.
But Keegan Sanders?
He was President Morgan’s executive assistant. Plus, as far as the entire company was concerned, Assistant Sanders was handsome enough to make his colleagues do a double-take.
But… “Hmm? Assistant Sanders?” For a second, the receptionist thought she had misheard. She and her colleague exchanged a look.
Because Keegan often worked late with his boss, they had seen his girlfriend waiting downstairs for him to go on dates a couple of times.
They knew what Assistant Sanders’s girlfriend looked like.
’And they hadn’t heard any recent news about Assistant Sanders breaking up with his girlfriend, had they?’
’So what was this situation, then?’
Jessie was oblivious to the two young receptionists’ thoughts. She nodded. “What’s wrong? Is he not here?”
The receptionist nodded. “Assistant Sanders just stepped out, probably to get dinner, but he should be back soon…” As she spoke, she couldn’t help but glance at the food container Jessie had placed on the desk.
’She didn’t know what was inside, but it smelled so good!’
“Why don’t you have a seat and wait for a little while? There’s a lounge area over there. Would you like anything to drink?” the receptionist offered considerately.
Jessie didn’t want anything to drink. She furrowed her brow, debating whether she should just forget it and call Victor directly.
Compared to surprising Victor, her own hunger was clearly more important right now.
’The fact that I’m here in person is already the biggest surprise for Victor,’ Jessie couldn’t help but make excuses for herself. ’The format definitely doesn’t matter!’
Just as Jessie said, “No, thank you,” and took out her phone, she suddenly heard a surprised voice from behind her.
