Chapter 94: Chapter 94: “You Are My Wife.
When Julian Grant left the Sterling family’s home, he cut a rather dispirited figure.
After staggering home, he first took a cold shower, then started packing his bags.
He hadn’t seen his parents since the incident. They, in turn, didn’t seem to think any explanation was needed. Even though he had been “missing” for three days, there wasn’t a single phone call from them asking where he was.
Julian Grant had no idea how long he’d been packing when the electronic doorbell rang for quite some time. He finally snapped out of it and answered the video feed from the main gate.
The sight of the person standing at his gate was enough to sober him up almost completely.
“Just a moment,” he said.
Julian Grant knew, of course, that Victor Morgan showing up at his door late at night wasn’t for a friendly chat to catch up.
He was also well aware that Victor likely had no intention of setting foot inside his home, so he went out to meet him.
The moment Julian Grant opened the electronic gate and stepped out, he was met with a fist.
Victor Morgan was wearing only a dress shirt. He had already taken off his jacket and rolled his sleeves up to his elbows, revealing the smooth, muscular lines of his forearms.
Jessie Sterling was always a heavy sleeper at home, but the moment she felt someone climb into her bed, she woke up.
Before her consciousness could fully return, Jessie felt herself being pulled into the arms of the person beside her.
He had a familiar, reassuring scent.
“Go back to sleep.”
A soothing whisper fell beside her ear, and a large hand began to gently pat her back.
Jessie never had a chance to wake up completely. She tumbled right back to sleep, nestled against his warm chest.
Victor Morgan, however, didn’t fall asleep so quickly. Despite flying overnight from Aethelburg to Southaven, enduring a tumultuous evening, and even getting into a fight with Julian Grant, he was still too keyed up.
He looked at his wife, finally in his arms. Only half of Jessie’s face was visible as she snuggled as close as she could to his chest. A place in his heart finally felt settled.
Victor Morgan reached out and brushed the long hair from Jessie’s ear, revealing her small, pale earlobe. The pad of his finger rested against it, rubbing gently a couple of times.
Even in her sleep, Jessie seemed to feel the faint tickle. Her head instinctively nuzzled against Victor Morgan’s chest, as if that could get rid of the tingling sensation on her ear.
Watching Jessie’s small movements, Victor Morgan let out a low chuckle. In the end, he stopped fiddling with her ear. Instead, he leaned down, placed a soft kiss on her forehead, and finally closed his eyes.
The next day, Jessie Sterling woke up feeling a little dazed.
She rolled over in bed, then sat up and looked around. “Victor Morgan?” Jessie called out tentatively, but there was no response in the room.
Jessie sat on the bed, her eyes filled with confusion.
Last night, she had really thought Victor Morgan had returned.
Jessie raised a hand, made a fist, and lightly tapped herself on the head. ’I didn’t dream it, did I?’
After washing up, Jessie went downstairs for breakfast. The elevator doors opened, and as she stepped out and turned her head, she saw the figure sitting in the dining room, facing her.
“Victor Morgan!”
Jessie shrieked, her eyes widening in disbelief.
“What are you doing here?!”
Jessie felt as if her head were stuffed with a tangled ball of yarn—she couldn’t think straight. She was shocked, confused, and also inexplicably happy.
It was Sunday, so for once, Director Sterling wasn’t working overtime at the corporation.
Hearing Jessie’s sudden shriek, Director Sterling was so startled he nearly dropped his fork onto his plate.
“Jessie Sterling,” Director Sterling said, glancing at his daughter with displeasure. “What’s all the shouting about?”
Jessie was speechless. ’I can’t very well tell them I thought I was hallucinating last night and just couldn’t process seeing Victor Morgan in our dining room, can I?’
Faye Fuller walked over just then. “What a way to talk, dear. Young Morgan is back for a meal. Is that so surprising?”
Jessie didn’t know how to answer, so she could only shoot an indignant glare at the “culprit.”
Victor Morgan’s eyes met hers, and seeing her expression, he couldn’t help but break into a smile.
Jessie sat down next to Victor Morgan and whispered, “When did you get here?”
“Last night.” Victor Morgan saw no reason to hide it.
“Huh?!” This time, Jessie was certain that the embrace she’d felt last night was no hallucination. “I knew it!” she muttered under her breath.
Victor Morgan asked, “What about it?”
Of course, Jessie wasn’t about to tell him that the first thing she did upon waking up this morning was to look for him in her room.
’If Victor Morgan knew, wouldn’t he be insufferably smug?’
“Didn’t you just go back yesterday? I already told you I was coming back tomorrow, so why did you come to Southaven last night? You didn’t even give me a hint,” Jessie said, reaching under the table to poke Victor Morgan’s thigh in annoyance.
The muscle in Victor Morgan’s thigh tensed. He looked at Jessie. The gloom was gone from her eyes, with no trace of the distress she’d felt last night. A faint sense of fond exasperation appeared in his gaze.
“Mm, I came to take you home,” Victor Morgan said. He didn’t mention last night’s events, assuming his in-laws didn’t know what had happened between Jessie and Julian Grant.
Since that was the case, he certainly wasn’t going to bring it up at the breakfast table.
Jessie pursed her lips into a smile.
After breakfast, Jessie pulled Victor Morgan into the garden for a walk, though her real intention was to talk privately.
“Did you lie to me last night? When you were driving, were you heading to the airport?” Jessie asked as she sat in the pavilion. It was surrounded by plump pink, white, and purple phalaenopsis orchids, which bloomed year-round. The people of Southaven loved to buy a pot for their homes during the New Year, and Faye Fuller had simply had a large number of them planted directly in the garden.
There was no use denying it now, so Victor Morgan simply nodded.
Jessie’s gaze immediately grew complicated. She huffed, “Actually… you really didn’t have to make a special trip…”
’Even though she had really, really wanted Victor Morgan by her side last night.’
Victor Morgan sighed and raised a hand to stroke Jessie’s soft, long hair. She hadn’t gone out today, and her hair was draped casually over her shoulders, making her look exceptionally sweet.
“You’re my wife,” Victor Morgan said, staring into Jessie’s wide, still slightly dazed eyes. “When you want me to be here, you don’t ever have to worry about whether it’s too much trouble for me.”
Besides, he didn’t consider a same-day round trip between Aethelburg and Southaven to be any trouble at all. Jessie had no reason to have such concerns.
