Chapter 187: Chapter 187: Lost
In fact, right after the incident, Jessie Sterling got a call from her mother-in-law.
Mrs. Morgan didn’t call to scold Jessie for getting mixed up with another man. Instead, she said assertively, “When you two get back, you’re coming to a class reunion with me.”
Jessie Sterling didn’t understand what she meant at first. After hanging up, she turned to Victor Morgan beside her and asked.
Victor Morgan just smiled when he heard.
His mother was a university student in the eighties and graduated from one of the top two universities in the country.
“Think about it. What did my mom major in?”
Jessie really had no idea what her mother-in-law had studied. But considering she used to be the CFO of the Morgan Group, she ventured a guess, “Economics? Or accounting?”
Victor Morgan shook his head. “That’s what she chose to study on her own after getting a government scholarship to go abroad. Her undergraduate degree was in political science.”
At this, Victor glanced at Jessie.
Jessie was actually very clever. Sometimes, all it took was a little hint for her to understand everything.
And this was one of those times.
The moment Victor finished speaking, Jessie gasped.
’How could I not understand the true meaning of Mrs. Morgan’s call now?’
“So, Mom wants to take me to meet some people?” Jessie grabbed Victor’s arm, her face alight with excitement. “Is it to help me deal with this Thorne Pictures situation?”
Mrs. Morgan knew that young people today didn’t have the patience for endless cocktail parties and business functions. So, even though they both lived in Aethelburg, she rarely asked Jessie to join her for such social obligations. At most, they would meet once or twice a month for a meal at home.
In fact, whenever Victor or his parents got busy, it was perfectly normal for them not to see each other for a month or more.
So for Mrs. Morgan to specifically call and invite Jessie to a class reunion, it was obvious she intended to introduce Jessie to her network.
The kind of network Jessie could really use right now.
Victor smiled and nodded. “Of course. You’re her daughter-in-law. You were nearly humiliated, so naturally, she’s going to stand up for you.”
Jessie couldn’t help but laugh, covering her face. Then, as if a new thought struck her, she peeked out from between her fingers, her expression turning worried. “But… Mom doesn’t think badly of me, does she? Because of… all that stuff that was online…”
’She didn’t really care about the rumors. But if her own family believed them… Jessie found that she cared a great deal after all.’
Victor reached out and gave Jessie a gentle flick on the forehead.
A moment later, she heard him scoff.
“What are you thinking!” Victor said. “If she couldn’t see through a pathetic little trick like that, do you think she’d be able to hold on to her position as President Chapman?”
Shea Chapman was Mrs. Morgan’s full name.
As Jessie recounted this to Lynn Jennings on their call, she couldn’t stop a pleased smile from spreading across her face.
Lynn Jennings: “Oh? You’ve got connections in high places? Who? President Morgan?”
Jessie shook her head. “Nope. My mother-in-law is taking me to her undergraduate class reunion tomorrow. I heard that even though her class was small, eighty percent of them are in government now. And at their age… you know what that means, right?”
At their age, they were all nearing retirement, which meant they’d reached the highest echelons of power.
On the other end of the video call, comprehension dawned on Lynn’s face. She immediately gave Jessie a big thumbs-up.
’Anyone who can win over their mother-in-law like that is seriously impressive! My friend is amazing!’
’She really is the kind of girl everyone loves.’
After ending her call with Lynn, Jessie dove back into her work, trying to catch up on her updates.
’It couldn’t be helped. She owed her readers so many updates. Now that she was back and had some free time, she had to use every spare moment to draw.’
By the time dinner rolled around, Jessie had finally finished and posted her latest installment.
She set down her stylus and pinched the bridge of her nose. Picking up her phone to check the time, she discovered a message from Victor sent two hours earlier.
It must have arrived while she was on the video call with Lynn, but she hadn’t noticed.
Victor said he wouldn’t be home for dinner tonight; he had to work late at the office.
Jessie frowned. ’Victor really is an iron man.’
’It’s a loss for the national team that he’s not a triathlete.’
He had just gotten back from a business trip abroad, and now he was already working late again.
’He’s such a workaholic.’
Before putting her phone down, Jessie replied with a quick “Got it,” then stood up from her chair to stretch.
She always felt a little stiff after sitting for so long.
Jessie quickly made her way toward the kitchen in the main house.
Tonight was supposed to be their first proper, on-schedule dinner since returning home. Before Jessie even got close, the delicious aroma of food wafted out to greet her.
“Smells so good,” Jessie murmured to herself as she stepped into the kitchen.
Her timing was perfect. She walked in just as the chef was pulling a glistening, perfectly roasted duck from the oven.
A thick layer of honey had been brushed over the duck’s skin. The sweet and savory aromas mingled in the air, a mouthwatering scent that could make anyone’s stomach rumble with anticipation.
It was a dish Jessie had grown to love after moving to Aethelburg.
The roast duck made at home was even better than any she’d had in a restaurant.
She loved the outer layer of skin, brushed with a thick honey glaze. The duck was always perfectly prepared, with no gaminess at all—just pure, fragrant flavor and very little fat.
There was also soup simmering in the kitchen. Summer was just beginning, and people from Southaven had their traditional soups for the season, meant to combat the heat, relieve fatigue, and cool the body.
Today, they had prepared a common variety: a pork bone soup with hairy fig root and poria.
It carried a faint coconut-like fragrance.
It was a soup Jessie had specifically requested when she woke up.
She had originally thought Victor would be home to eat, but now it seemed unlikely he’d get to enjoy a bowl of the fresh soup.
“Young Madam, shall I prepare for dinner now?” the butler asked. Seeing Jessie in the kitchen, he assumed she must be hungry.
Dinner had actually been scheduled a little later tonight. The butler had taken into consideration that Jessie had slept in until past one in the afternoon and eaten a late lunch, so he figured she wouldn’t be hungry just yet.
Jessie shook her head. Victor would only tell her he wasn’t coming home for dinner, not the butler, so the household staff was still unaware he was working late.
“I won’t be eating at home,” Jessie said. “Please pack everything up. I’m going to take it to Victor.”
She had made the decision in the split second she took to reply to Victor’s message.
’Since Victor didn’t have time to come home, she would just bring dinner to him.’
’Besides, in all the time they’d been married, she’d never once brought him a meal at work.’
