Chapter 133: Assault
Braelyn’s POV
For a second, I just stood there, frozen in place trying to make sense of what my eyes were telling me.
Genny. What was she doing here?
She looked nothing like herself.
Her hair was a wild mess, strands clinging to her flushed face. Mascara smudged beneath glassy eyes. Her dress hung crookedly on her body, one strap barely holding on, the fabric wrinkled and tugged as if someone had been too rough with it. She smelled like alcohol.
Her face was completely flushed thanks to the alcohol and unrestrained anger.
But I didn’t care about any of that. It didn’t matter who offended whom; all I saw was that she was in a compromised position.
All I could see was the way she trembled. The way her shoulders shook as she tried to hold herself together.
And the bastard in front of her. Something ugly and feral rose in my chest.
“Get the hell away from her,” I snapped, already moving forward ready to unleash my anger on him. My hands fisted, nails biting into my palms. “Back off. Now.”
He laughed. A nasty, slurred sound. “Relax,” he said.”This has nothing to do with you. ”
My vision went red, and it blurred at the edges; all I could see was Genny.
I surged forward, but I could jump at him, a strong finger wrapped around my arm and yanked me back hard enough that I stumbled.
“Braelyn,” Lucien snarled, fury vibrating through the single word. His grip was iron, unyielding. “No.”
My lips parted to argue but his gaze clamped them immediately. If he was mad earlier now he had lost it.
Before I could protest, he stepped past me.
The shift was instant. Lucien didn’t shout or threaten. He had more actions than words. He simply moved fast and brutally.
In one sharp motion, he grabbed the man by the collar and threw him. To be clear, not shoved, but he literally threw him across the hallway, sending him crashing several feet away from Genny, his back slamming into the wall with a sickening thud.
The hallway echoed with the sound. He wasn’t done. Lucien rushed towards him, and before the guy could react, he was already being assaulted by a round of fast punches. His protest was swallowed by successive punches.
I tore my eyes from the assault and didn’t waste a second more to rush towards Genny. I shrugged my jacket off, and wrapped it around her shoulders, pulling her into me. “Hey… hey, I’ve got you,” I murmured, hands shaking as I tried to cover her torn dress. “You’re okay. I’m here.”
She was still dazed, but the more she saw me clearly, a sickening sob escaped her trembling lips.
She clutched at my clothes like she was drowning, fingers digging into my fabric, her body trembling violently. Then she broke, tears steamed her cheeks, followed by an ugly, raw sob which tore out of her throat.
“I…it’s my fault,” she whimpered, words slurring together. “I shouldn’t have..” hiccup. ” I’m so stupid, Lynn”
“No,” I said firmly, brushing her hair back, cradling her face. “No, Genny. Stop. This is not your fault. Look at me.”
She shook her head over and over, eyes unfocused, tears streaking down her cheeks. “I messed up… I always mess everything up…”
My chest ached. Something told me she wasn’t talking about the assault. It made my heart squeeze uncomfortably.
Behind us, chaos erupted. The man shrugged to push Lucien away then staggered to his feet, rage twisting his features. His face looked like an artwork of disaster curated by Lucien.
Lucien’s fist clenched, he didn’t look like he was done, and the man recognised that look in his eyes.
“You don’t know who the fuck I am,” he spat at Lucien, pointing a trembling finger at him. “I’ve got people. You touch me again and I’ll make you regret it. You hear me? Gang don’t take shit lightly.”
Lucien didn’t even blink. He literally didn’t give a damn, and honestly, I wanted him to teach that bastard a lesson.
He went at him again. Without the slightest hint of hesitation in his movements .No warning whatsoever.
The sound of fists hitting flesh cracked through the hallway. The bastard swung wildly, desperation fueling him, but Lucien was controlled despite his rage every move was calculated.
Genny’s face was still buried in my chest. She continued crying mumbling words I could not understand.
Then something glinted. It was fast and my heart dropped to my stomach sensing the danger
“Lucien!” I screamed.
The knife flashed out of nowhere, a cheap blade sliding from a hidden pocket. The man lunged at him without calculation.
Lucien backed away and twisted aside just in time. The blade sliced through the air where his ribs had been a second ago. The near-miss gave the bastard what he needed.
Enough distance to escape and he took the chance. He bolted off running on his heels as his life depended on it because it did.
Lucien cursed and moved to chase but I stood abruptly, still holding Genny. That man was dangerous and might have backup close by.
“Don’t,” I said, voice trembling but firm. ” he isn’t worth it.” Her gaze flickered at his brushed fist. He didn’t take much damage but I was still worried.
Lucien hesitated, his gaze flickering between where the bastard ran off and my face. His jaw clenched. The fury was rolling off him in waves. Then he exhaled sharply and turned back.
“What happened?” he asked, eyes scanning Genny, concern sharpening his voice.
“I don’t know but I think we should call the police,” I suggested.
She shook her head violently. “Don’t… don’t call the police,” she blurted out, panic flashing through her drunken haze. “Please.”
Lucien frowned at her reaction. I also found something weird about it. Who knew what might have happened if we hadn’t shown up as we did? That man had clear intentions to assault her.
“No,” she snapped weakly. “No police.” still insistent on it. “He is already gone.”
She sagged against me, exhausted and barely holding herself upright. “I want to go home,” she said still shaken
“We need to take her home,” I said quietly.
Lucien’s expression tightened. “Her place is in the opposite direction.”
I sighed, rubbing my temple. “Then we call Joey.” That was the first person I could think of. I wasn’t okay leaving her in the hands of an Uber driver in this condition.
She didn’t like my suggestion. For a moment I forgot her dislike for him
Genny jerked upright, fury overriding even her drunken haze. She ripped herself halfway from my grip. “Do you want to kill me?” she screeched. “He’ll give me a heart attack before I make it to my doorstep!”
