Chapter 291: Two wrongs doesn’t make a right

Braelyn’s POV

The baby was at risk. The news was delivered but I didn’t see the smallest ripple of emotion in Raphael’s face. My heart squeezed, maybe it was because I might never be a mother and I had compassion for that life knowing it was a blessing despite how the baby was conceived.

Ronan’s expression faltered at the news but the one who reacted the most was Natalia

Natalia’s composure was completely shattered at those words. She rushed forward and grabbed the doctor’s hands with trembling fingers.

“Save them,” she begged, her voice breaking. “Please save my grandchild. Do whatever you must.” she pleaded. Her voice was completely hoarse.

“Cost isn’t the problem. We can’t afford to lose the baby.” Natalia’s attitude took a 180 from the vicious act she had before me. I stood by the side watching like I was a spectator and this wasn’t my life.

Like the woman at risk wasn’t my husband’s mistress and I wasn’t accused of killing her child.

The doctor nodded firmly. “We need family consent to proceed. The consent form must be signed right now. We need to flush out the toxins. ”

A heavy silence dropped between us all. Amelia’s family wasn’t here and this surgery wouldn’t be delayed for long. I glanced at Raphael waiting for him to speak but he remained quiet

That was when I spoke. “Can the baby’s father sign the form?” I asked calmly.

Raphael’s head snapped toward me in shock, his fingers instantly grabbing my wrist. “Lynn, what are you doing?” he whispered harshly.

I met his gaze without hesitation.

“I am saving your child,” I said quietly. “You were not planning to let an innocent baby die just because the situation is complicated, were you?” I said looking him straight in the eyes.

For the first time that night, Raphael’s composure truly broke. His face crumpled in a way I had never seen before, the conflict in his eyes raw and exposed, and in that moment the truth hit me with brutal clarity.

He had been prepared to sacrifice the child. Was he that desperate to hold onto us that he would throw away the child because he knew that with this child whatever little hope that was left for us was gone.

Raphael glanced at me, his voice low. “Braelyn please..” I didn’t know what he wanted to say but I cut him off before he did.

“Not only is the child at risk but also Amelia. If disaster falls I will be a suspect. ” I explained and his expression froze. “Even if you aren’t doing it for the baby, do it for me.” The words tasted bitter in my mouth but I swallowed them anywaynyway

His lips parted then closed a weak smile curled up his lips..”I don’t really care about the child Lynn. If it survives it ties Amelia to my life for good…” he said with a tragic smile on his face that made my heart squeeze

Natalia overheard our conversation and jumped into it. “What do you mean by you don’t care? It is your blood.” She barked her hand ready to slap him but he caught her wrist on time.

“Mother, that is enough. ” Raphael barked and swung his mother’s hand. Ronan finally moved

“Don’t raise your voice on your mother.” Ronan reprimanded. Raphael’s frown deepened

“Then keep your wife under control. ” he hissed.

Natalia stared at Raphael in disbelief and this time tears burst out of her eyes. She cried, this one didn’t look plotted. She looked like she was genuinely heartbroken.

“What did she do to you Raphael you are ready to sacrifice everything?” She cried. “Please save him.” The desperation was real in her voice

Ronan who had been silent all along finally spoke..”Don’t be stubborn Raphael. I raised you to be smarter than this. Sign the goddamn papers.” He hissed, his handsome face distorted

The doctor felt out of place, but his voice still remained firm. “If we stall she might lose the baby,” he reminded but Raphael just stood there out of it

That’s when Natalia did something I never imagined. She grabbed my hand and went to her knees. I froze instantly and Raphael was left dumbfounded.

The tears rolled down as she pleaded. “Please Braelyn just have some conscience. Even if the baby is born no one will take your title from you. This baby is Raphael’s future, don’t let him destroy it.”

I trembled, she was on her knees. Natalia Volkova, the woman who had the power to destroy lives with a single command was on her knees in tears begging her to save my husband’s bastard child

“Mother, that is enough, this has nothing to do with Lynn..” Raphael snapped out of his gaze state trying to separate us

“No I won’t until she agrees, ” Natalia screamed. Ronan grabbed her hand begging her to stand.

“That’s enough Natalia. ” he hissed then glanced at me..”If you have any respect left for her stop this. If that child dies it makes the allegations against you stronger.” Ronan ruthlessly pointed out

I was the villain trembling at the scene. I drew in a deep breath and my voice came out cold..” Sign the papers Raphael. 2 wrong doesn’t make a right ” I stated and the hallway went silent

Raphael let go then clenched his fist before walking to the doctor. “Make the arrangement. I am the baby’s father..” he said through gritted teeth. “There is horrible traffic and her family won’t be here on time. I will take all responsibilities. ”

Once the word was said, action started. “Please follow me to sign the forms.” The doctor urged. Raphael gave me a last glance before leaving. Natalia finally crumbled and started crying in her hands.

“She had taken my son from me.” She cried. “What did I do to deserve this?” Ronan sighed and squatted her way.

“That’s enough Natalia. ” but she refused to stop.

“I won’t stop, everyone should know the monster Raphael married.” She screamed glaring at me waiting for a reaction but I didn’t flinch

I quietly walked over and took a seat leaving Natalia to her theatrics. I didn’t care about the allegations and honestly, my heart wasn’t aching as much as I expected.

Tears rolled down my face as I bowed my head. It wasn’t because I was falsely accused or because of Amelia’s pregnancy but an old-rooted guilt.

It was truly my fault. God I was envious. I was very envious of Amelia. Why couldn’t I have a child of my own?

That was what hit me the most, the craving to have my flesh and bones. It didn’t hurt because the child was Raphael.
