Chapter 119: Night with the Fox
The festival had ended in a slow, glittering fade. The last falling stars had drifted down like dying embers, the music had softened into distant echoes, and the Grand Celestial Plaza had emptied until only the night wind moved across the obsidian.
Bai Yue slipped back into the guest pavilion long after the others had retired.
Zhēn had fallen asleep against the Burning Sky’s shoulder hours ago, and Dà Jiāo Huǒ had carried her off to his private chambers. Bai Yue hadn’t argued. She’d only pressed a kiss to her daughter’s forehead and let them go.
Now the pavilion was silent. Moonlight spilled through the carved screens, turning everything silver and shadow. Bai Yue shed the deep purple gown with careful hands, folding it over the back of a chair like it belonged to someone else.
She pulled on a simple sleeping robe, soft linen, undyed, and crawled beneath the covers. The bed was enormous, carved from pale jade-veined wood, and it swallowed her small frame.
She closed her eyes.
Sleep refused to come.
Her skin still remembered the festival lights, the press of eyes, the brush of Zhāo Yàn’s crimson sleeve against hers when no one was looking. She could still feel the ghost of his promise against her lips: Tonight. After the last dance.
The last dance had ended long ago.
She turned onto her side, tucking one hand beneath her cheek. Her heartbeat sounded too loud in the quiet.
A soft knock.
She froze.
The door slid open without waiting for an answer. Zhāo Yàn stepped inside, barefoot, his hair loose and slightly damp from the night air.
He wore only loose black trousers and an open robe of thin silk that slipped off one shoulder as he moved. The moonlight caught the faint scars across his chest, old fox marks, earned long before she knew him.
He closed the door behind him without sound.
Bai Yue pushed herself up on one elbow. “You said after the last dance.”
“I did.” He crossed the room in slow steps, like he was giving her time to send him away. “The musicians stopped. The stars fell. The last dance is over.”
She swallowed. “Everyone’s asleep.”
“Everyone who matters.” He stopped at the edge of the bed. “May I?”
She didn’t answer with words. She simply shifted, making space.
He sank down beside her.
“You’re still trembling,” he said softly.
“It’s cold.”
He smiled, small and knowing. “Hmm.”
He reached out slowly, giving her every chance to pull back. When she didn’t, his fingers brushed her cheek, then tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
Bai Yue let her eyes close. “It’s been… a very long time.”
“I know.” His thumb traced the curve of her jaw. “We go as slow as you need. Or we stop. Your choice. Always.”
She opened her eyes and she leaned forward first.
The kiss was careful. She felt the tension in her own shoulders, the way her body wanted to curl inward from habit. But his hand stayed gentle at the nape of her neck, thumb stroking small circles, and slowly, very slowly, she relaxed into it.
When she sighed against his mouth, he deepened it just enough to taste her, a slow slide of tongue that sent warmth curling through her limbs. She made a small sound and felt his smile against her lips.
His hand moved to her waist, resting there without pulling, without pressing. She shifted closer anyway, until her knee brushed his thigh and her fingers found the open edge of his robe, curling into silk and skin.
He kissed along her jaw next, soft and unhurried. Down the side of her throat. When his lips brushed the sensitive spot beneath her ear she shivered hard, fingers tightening on his shoulder.
“Still strange?” he murmured against her skin.
“A little.” Her voice was unsteady. “But…..good strange.”
“Good strange is allowed.” He kissed the hollow of her throat, felt her pulse jump. “Tell me if it stops being good.”
She nodded.
He guided her down slowly until her back met the bedding. The robe she wore slipped off one shoulder; he followed the line of exposed skin with kisses, collarbone, the soft swell above her breast, careful not to push fabric aside yet.
When his mouth returned to hers she opened for him more easily, her hands sliding up his back, tracing muscle and old scars. He made a low sound in his throat, almost a growl, almost a sigh, and she felt it vibrate against her lips.
His hand slipped beneath the hem of her robe, resting warm against her thigh. No higher. Just there. Waiting.
Bai Yue broke the kiss long enough to breathe. “Zhāo Yàn…”
He stilled instantly. “Too much?”
“No.” She swallowed. “Just… slow.”
“Slow,” he agreed.
He kissed her again, deeper now, but still measured. His hand moved in lazy strokes along her thigh, up to her hip, then back down, never rushing, never demanding. She arched slightly into the touch, surprised by her own response. Her body remembered after all. Not perfectly. Not smoothly. But enough.
When she tugged at his robe he let her push it off his shoulders. Silk pooled around his waist. She traced the lines of his chest with careful fingers, feeling the steady thump of his heart.
“You’re warm,” she whispered.
“You’re warmer.”
He kissed his way down her throat again, then lower, over the fabric still covering her, soft presses of lips that made her breath hitch. When he reached the tie of her robe he paused, looking up at her.
She nodded.
He loosened it slowly, parting the linen inch by inch. Cool air touched her skin; she shivered. He chased the shiver with his mouth, kissing the newly bared curve of her breast, then lower, across her stomach.
Bai Yue’s fingers threaded into his hair.
He lingered there, kissing soft skin, tracing old stretch marks with the lightest brush of lips.
When he finally slid back up to kiss her mouth again, his hand settled between her thighs. Gentle enough to make her gasp against him.
“Still good?” he asked, voice rougher now.
She nodded, eyes glassy. “Don’t stop.”
He didn’t.
They moved together slowly, carefully, hands and mouths and quiet sounds swallowed by the night. There was only the heat building in gentle waves, until she trembled beneath him, clinging, whispering his name like a secret.
Afterward he held her close, her head tucked beneath his chin, his hand stroking slow circles on her back. Their breathing gradually steadied. The moonlight had shifted, shadows were longer now.
Bai Yue pressed her lips to his collarbone. “You kept your promise.”
“I always keep promises to you,” he murmured.
She smiled against his skin. “Stupid fox.”
“Yours,” he corrected softly.
She closed her eyes.
