Chapter 18: Cold Scales and Broken Hearts

As the White Tiger tribe enjoyed the Great Soup Festival, eating their fill and sitting by warm fires, a shadow slipped through the southern jungle.

Vara was furious.

She didn’t run away. She stomped forward, angry and proud. Every branch she broke felt like Ren’s neck. Every vine she cut was Kael’s betrayal.

“He chose a hairless rat,” Vara hissed to the empty forest. “A weak, flat-chested runt who plays with mud!”

She stopped and looked back at the Tiger Cliffs. The bonfire’s faint glow was still visible. She heard the Wolves howling. Were those scavengers really eating her tribe’s food now?

“I will not be humiliated,” Vara spat. “If Kael wants to play house with the human, he can burn in it.”

She turned South.

The air felt thick. The bright green jungle faded to a dull, gray-brown. The ground became soft and wet, water rising around her ankles as she walked. The trees twisted above her, covered in moss that hung like old cobwebs.

The Black Swamp.

Most beastmen stayed away from this place. It was cold, quiet, and full of dangers that could kill you quickly. But Vara was desperate.

Hiss.

A sound from the canopy.

Vara froze. “I seek the King!” she shouted, holding her hands up. “I bring information! Information about the Fire-Female!”

Silence.

Then, the water in front of her rippled.

A massive black anaconda rose from the muck. It didn’t have a human face—it was fully beast. Its head was the size of a boulder.

Then, it shifted.

Bones cracked and scales pulled back. A tall, thin guard with slit eyes and a black obsidian spear stood in front of her.

“The King does not see trash,” the guard sneered, flicking his forked tongue.

“Tell him,” Vara said, her voice trembling but defiant, “that I know how the Tiger King cured the Madness. And I know how to get the ’Heat Source’ for him.”

The guard hesitated. Everyone knew the King was obsessed with warmth.

“Follow,” the guard hissed. “But if you waste his time… you will be dinner.”

The Onyx Palace

Syris didn’t live in a cave. He lived in a ruin.

It looked like the ruins of an old temple from before the beastmen, half-sunken in the swamp. Black stone pillars stuck out of the dark water. The floor was just stone walkways linking platforms.

It was grand, beautiful, and freezing cold.

Vara shivered as she walked into the main chamber. Her breath turned to mist in the cold air.

Syris sat on a throne made from one piece of black obsidian. He wore shiny snakeskin robes over his long legs. He looked bored, resting his chin on his hand and watching a small green frog hop across the floor.

“My King,” the guard bowed. “A stray Tiger. She claims to know the source of the Fire.”

Syris kept his head still and glanced at Vara out of the corner of his eye.

“Vara,” Syris said softly, his voice echoing in the damp room. “The loud one. The one Kael rejected.”

Vara flinched. “He did not reject me! He was bewitched! The human female… she used sorcery!”

“Sorcery?” Syris sat up slightly. “Or seasoning?”

He reached into his robe and took out a small glass vial. Inside was a single drop of red oil, left over from Ren’s spicy stew bowl he had stolen from the market.

He shook the vial, and it glowed faintly in the dim light.

“I tasted her sorcery,” Syris whispered. “It made my blood sing. It made my fingers warm for an hour.”

He suddenly looked at Vara with sharp focus.

“Why are you here, Tiger?”

“I wish to destroy her!” Vara shrieked. “She has turned the Alpha into a house pet! She feeds the Wolves! She is building a wall! Kael is weak now because of her softness!”

Syris laughed, his voice dry and rough.

“Weak?” Syris shook his head. “I saw Kael punch a 300-pound Boar through the air because the boar looked at her legs. That is not weakness, Vara. That is motivation.”

He stood and moved down the steps of the throne, circling Vara like a predator sizing up its prey.

“You are jealous,” Syris diagnosed calmly. “Basic. Boring.”

“I can get her for you,” Vara blurted out.

Syris stopped.

“Get her?”

“The Shadow Beasts are coming,” Vara said quickly, playing her ace. “The Wolves said a horde is moving South. They will hit the Tiger Cliffs in days. Kael will be distracted fighting the horde.”

Vara smiled, her face twisting into a cruel expression.

“While Kael is fighting… the female will be alone in her wooden box. I can lead you in. I know the secret paths up the cliff. I can drug the water supply. We can take her.”

Syris stared at her. His face was unreadable.

To him, Vara was disgusting. A traitor who would sell out her own tribe for spite.

But…

He looked at his pale hands. They were cold again. The warmth from the stew was gone, leaving him sore and stiff. The rainy season was starting, and soon the swamp would be unbearable.

He needed the Heat. He needed the Chef.

“And what do you want in return?” Syris asked.

“I want Kael,” Vara said. “When the female is gone, he will need a mate. He will come back to me.”

Syris hid a smirk. Vara was delusional. If they took Ren, Kael would never return to Vara. He would do anything to get Ren back.

But that wasn’t Syris’ problem.

“Agreed,” Syris said.

He reached out and touched Vara’s shoulder. His hand was freezing, sapping the heat right out of her skin.

“We won’t wait for the Horde,” Syris said. “We’ll move with them. Chaos gives us a chance, little Tiger.”

He turned to his guard.

“Prepare the boat,” Syris ordered. “And bring the sleeping powder. We are going to kidnap a Chef.”

Back at the Cabin (The Next Morning)

Ren sneezed.

“Bless you,” Kael said. He was hanging upside down from a roof beam, hammering a nail into the window frame Ren wanted.

“Someone must be talking about me,” Ren said, rubbing her nose. “I feel a disturbance in the force.”

“The force?” Kael dropped down, landing lightly on his feet. “Is that a type of weather?”

“It means trouble.”

Ren looked out the window. The wall was coming along well, and the Wolves were working hard. The smell of breakfast—oatmeal with crushed grains and honey—filled the air.

It felt peaceful.

But then, the System chimed.

[System Alert: Antagonist Plot Advanced.][Status: Vara has allied with the Snake King.][Threat: Kidnapping Attempt imminent.][Recommended Action: Upgrade Door Locks. Invest in Guard Dogs.]

Ren sighed, stirring her oatmeal.

“Kael,” she said casually.

“Yes, Mate?”

“Remember how I said the Snakes were creepy?”

“Yes.”

“I think we should double the guard tonight. And maybe… teach the Wolves how to dig pit traps.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t ask why. He trusted her instincts and her nose.

“I will sharpen the stakes,” Kael said, grabbing his spear. “If a Snake comes here, I will make you a new pair of boots.”

Ren looked at her frying pan.

“Boots are nice,” she murmured. “But I think snake meat is technically edible if you fry it deep enough.”

Kael grinned. “That’s my girl.”
