Chapter 259: The Sins are Stacked
The heavy, frantic thud of footsteps and loud voices rapidly approaching through the brush snapped Ren right out of her post-orgasmic daze.
Her eyes flew wide open. She was still lying face-down in the dirt with her deer-hide dress hiked all the way up to her waist.
With an embarrassing, ungraceful squeak, Ren quickly scrambled to her hands and knees. She frantically yanked the brown deer-hide dress down over her bare backside, slapped the dirt off her thighs, and dashed.
She ran like a bat out of hell.
Unfortunately, Ren possessed genuinely terrible running stamina. By the time she sprinted away from the oak tree and reached the opposite end of the clearing, her chest was burning like she had just swallowed a lit match.
Wheezing heavily, Ren stumbled to a halt. She bent over, resting her hands on her knees as she desperately sucked in huge, ragged gasps of oxygen.
When the black spots finally cleared from her vision, she looked up and saw Katleen sitting peacefully nearby in the grass, gently watching over the massive cuddle-puddle of sleeping cubs.
Ren quickly stood up straight, desperately trying to force her breathing to sound normal. She plastered on a casual smile and sauntered over to the female white tiger.
“Hey, Katleen,” Ren wheezed slightly, leaning her shoulder against a nearby tree trunk to keep herself upright. “Where… where did everyone go?”
Katleen pointed toward the dense patch of forest Ren had just narrowly escaped from. “We heard a female cry out over there. They all rushed over to check it out.”
“Oh,” Ren said perfectly casually.
On the inside, a massive, overwhelming wave of relief washed over her. They didn’t know the loud, pathetic moaning was hers. They just thought some random stray female had wandered close to the camp.
Just then, one of the tiny sleeping bodies in the grass pile began to squirm. The little grey wolf cub suddenly woke up.
In a completely unexpected flash, the furry little pup disappeared. Sitting in his place was a tiny, completely naked toddler. He had a mop of messy grey hair, round, chubby cheeks, a pair of fluffy wolf ears sticking out of his head, and a little tail wagging confusedly behind him.
The toddler blinked his large, innocent eyes. He looked down at his little hands in confusion, flexing his stubby fingers. Then, he reached down and gripped his ten toes.
The sheer shock of the change was entirely too much for his tiny brain to handle. He threw his head back and suddenly burst into loud, wailing tears.
“Oh, sweetheart!” Ren cooed. She dropped to her knees and scooped the crying toddler up into her arms, gently bouncing him against her chest. She looked over at Katleen. “Why is he crying?”
Katleen just smiled fondly, watching the screaming toddler. “It must have been his very first time shifting into his beastman form. It can be quite scary for the little ones when they suddenly lose their fur and claws.”
Ren did her absolute best to comfort the little guy, rubbing his back and making soothing shushing noises.
“Shh, it’s okay, little bean,” Ren whispered. She pulled back slightly and wiped a tear from his chubby cheek. “Do you want to go see what the others are up to with me?”
The toddler sniffled loudly, his fluffy wolf ears drooping as he gave a tiny nod.
Ren smiled brightly, her heart completely melting. She couldn’t help but gush over how ridiculously adorable he was, gently pinching his soft cheek before settling him securely on her hip.
Carrying the toddler, Ren casually walked back across the clearing, heading precisely in the direction Kael and the group had gone.
When she found them, she had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from bursting into nervous laughter.
The entire group were gathered in a tight circle by the oak tree. They were all completely focused on something on the ground, murmuring amongst themselves like a prehistoric CSI unit.
“It might have been two wild beasts mating,” Yuriel the wolf beastman suggested, stroking his chin.
“Or a female and a stray,” Barnaby added. “Mating season is approaching its peak, after all. The hormones are making everyone bold.”
Ren watched in absolute horror as they took turns leaning down to inspect a broad green leaf on the ground. Resting perfectly in the center of the leaf was a small puddle of translucent, white fluid.
Her fluid.
“But that makes no sense,” Kael grumbled, his thick brows furrowed in deep concentration as he sniffed the air around the leaf. “If a female was here, experiencing such high arousal, the scent would be overwhelming. But there is absolutely nothing. We can’t smell a thing.”
Ren let out a long, silent exhale, feeling entirely at ease. The Scent Masking Spray had literally just saved her life.
“Ahem,” Ren cleared her throat loudly.
The entire group jumped.
“What are you all doing standing around the bushes?” Ren asked, raising a strict, authoritative eyebrow and shifting the toddler on her hip. “Shouldn’t you be working on the village?”
The crowd immediately parted. Kael’s golden eyes snapped toward her, and the deep, heavy tension in his broad shoulders instantly vanished. His gaze softened with pure, unfiltered relief when he saw that she was perfectly safe.
“Right! Back to work!” Yuriel coughed awkwardly, quickly kicking some dirt over the scandalous leaf.
The beastmen hurriedly scurried off, rushing back to the trenches and the mud huts like scolded children. But before the crowd completely dispersed, the mother of the wolf cub rushed forward.
Her eyes went wide when she saw the naked toddler sitting on Ren’s hip. “My cub!” she shrieked excitedly. “He shifted!”
The remaining beastmen paused, immediately letting out loud, boisterous cheers of congratulations. A first shift was a huge milestone. Ren smiled warmly and handed the sniffling toddler over to his overjoyed mother, who practically wept as she peppered the boy’s face with kisses.
Soon, the trees cleared out, and it was only Ren and Kael left standing near the oak tree.
Kael immediately stepped into her personal space, his large hands reaching out to gently cup her arms. He looked her up and down, checking for injuries.
“I didn’t see when you got back,” Kael murmured, his deep voice thick with concern. “When we heard the female cry out, I was terrified that a feral stray had gotten to you. I was worried you got hurt.”
A sharp, painful wave of guilt aggressively gnawed at the lining of Ren’s stomach. Her lips were undoubtedly still swollen from the Fox’s brutal kisses, and her thighs still felt weak from the intense pleasure Vex had forced out of her. Yet here Kael was, looking at her with such profound, unwavering devotion and worry.
Ren ruthlessly shoved the guilt down into a dark mental box and slammed the lid shut.
She stared back into his loving golden eyes and reached down, intertwining her small fingers with his massive, calloused hand.
“I’m perfectly fine, Kael,” Ren lied smoothly, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze. “I actually went to pee on the other side of the clearing. I didn’t hear a thing.”
Kael let out a heavy sigh, nodding as he accepted her alibi without a single second of hesitation.
Ren tugged on his hand, leading him away from the scene of the crime and back toward the construction site. She immediately changed the subject to distract him.
“Actually,” Ren started brightly, swinging their joined hands. “I was just thinking about the village layout. I need you guys to build a toilet.”
Kael blinked down at her, confused. “A toilet?”
“Yes,” Ren responded as they walked. “A pit toilet. Because honestly, I am completely tired of going behind trees and bushes to do my business. Leaves are not good toilet paper. It’s unhygienic, and the mosquitoes are ruthless.”
Kael nodded slowly. “How do we build this… pit toilet?”
“Well,” Ren babbled enthusiastically, gesturing wildly with her free hand. “We are going to need a really, really big hole in the ground. And then we build a small, enclosed hut right over it with a wooden seat.”
