High up in the leafy canopy of the oak tree, Vex’s devastatingly wicked smirk only widened at Ren’s furious demand. He lazily tossed another shelled walnut into the air, caught it cleanly in his mouth, and chewed it with deliberate, agonizing slowness.

Then, he moved.

With the terrifying, fluid grace of a true predator, Vex slipped off the thick branch and dropped. He fell through the air without making a single sound and landed perfectly on his feet directly behind Ren.

Ren gasped, her heart hammering violently against her chest as she spun on her heels.

The moment she turned around, she was immediately intimidated. Vex was standing entirely too close, his massive frame towering over her tiny human one. The sheer height difference forced her to tilt her head back just to meet his gaze. Despite her racing pulse, Ren stubbornly held her ground, plastering a firm, angry glare onto her face.

Vex leaned down slightly, his bright orange eyes dancing with dark amusement. “I am completely ready to learn my lesson,” he taunted smoothly, his voice a low, melodic purr.

Ren instinctively took a step back as he slowly approached her. He took a step forward. She took another step back, retreating until her shoulder blades hit the rough, thick trunk of the oak tree.

She was trapped.

Her chest was heaving heavily as she looked up at him. She desperately tried to keep the defiant, tough-girl expression locked on her face, but her burning red cheeks completely betrayed her overwhelming nervousness. Vex raised his arms, planting a hand on the bark on either side of her head, completely caging her in.

He leaned even closer, the intoxicating, musky scent of the forest and crushed walnuts washing over her.

“What are you going to do to me?” Vex asked, his voice dropping to a seductive whisper. “Are you going to kick me? Slap me? Punch me?”

His orange eyes slowly, deliberately flickered down to her trembling mouth. “Are you going to bite me?”

Ren swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly dry.

Vex leaned his head down, his lips brushing dangerously close to the shell of her ear. “Whatever you decide to do,” he whispered seductively, sending a violent shiver straight down her spine, “you should do it as hard as possible. I like it rough… and I like it even more when you are violent.”

Ren’s face erupted into a brilliant, fiery red.

’Shut up!’ Ren screamed in her thoughts, completely scandalized. ’That sounds infinitely more like torture for me than for him!’

All of Ren’s righteous anger from being pelted with walnuts rapidly died down, instantly replaced by a deep, overwhelming shyness. He was just so incredibly close, his large body pressing against her personal space, taunting her with that sinful, beautiful face. She could feel his warm breath ghosting across her flushed cheek.

Seeing her hesitate, Vex’s smirk grew into a triumphant grin. “Just as I thought,” he murmured, his orange eyes glinting. “You are all bark, and absolutely no bite.”

Ren clenched her jaw. ’I will show him,’ she thought furiously.

Mustering all the strength in her arm, Ren swung her hand back and slapped him completely across the face.

The sharp, echoing sound of skin hitting skin rang out through the quiet forest. It was a genuinely hard hit, packed with all the pent-up frustration of her chaotic day.

Vex’s head snapped to the side from the force of the blow.

For a split second, Ren actually felt a spike of terrifying regret.

But when Vex slowly turned his face back to look at her, he wasn’t angry. He was smirking. A thin, bright trail of blood leaked from the corner of his split lip, and his eyes were blown wide, pupils dilated in dark, feral ecstasy.

Worse yet, Ren could distinctly feel a thick, scorching hot erection suddenly hardening and pressing insistently against her thigh through his leather loincloth.

He was incredibly, undeniably turned on from the slap.

Vex completely ignored the question. He reached up, casually wiping the blood from his lip with the back of his thumb, and looked at her empty hands.

“Why did you come out here empty-handed?” Vex asked, a playful glint returning to his eyes. “Where is the food?”

Ren crossed her arms defensively over her chest. “There was none for you.”

Vex immediately dropped his smirk and pouted. He actually stuck his bottom lip out, making his fluffy orange ears droop pitifully against his orange hair. “Is that any way to treat a friend?”

Ren frowned, completely immune to his manipulative puppy-dog eyes. “We are not friends.”

Vex’s pout instantly vanished. The wicked smirk returned in full force as he walked right back up to her, effortlessly closing the distance she had just created.

“You are absolutely right,” Vex agreed, his voice dropping into that smooth, intoxicating purr. “We are not friends. We are secret lovers.”

Ren glared up at him, her green eyes flashing with indignation. “We are not secret lovers!”

Vex smirked, leaning down until his face was mere inches from hers. His gaze fell to her lips, entirely unapologetic and overflowing with raw desire.

“Don’t kiss me back, then,” Vex challenged.

He didn’t give Ren a single fraction of a second to process his words. Before she could even open her mouth to argue, Vex closed the gap and crashed his lips down heavily onto hers.
