Chapter 13: Deception

Blood moths descended upon us, bringing carnage in their wake. The scene turned into pure chaos as students ran off on their own; most of them ran back to the auditorium, but I doubted they made it far. The vice president screamed for them to come back, but his words were like a drop of rain in an ocean. They couldn’t affect the tide.

He soon realized that his words had lost all effect, and we were forced to do the only thing we could: run. Our only choice now was to make a break for it and get out of the building. I knew exactly where this was headed, so I decided to part ways with them at that moment.

Liora saw that I was being left behind as they all rushed toward the stairs, and I could feel her irritation. No, it was more than just irritation, I could feel her boiling rage. I gave her a subtle wave as she glanced back at me, but this seemed to irk her even more.

I didn’t have time to ponder her irritation any longer as the swarm of blood moths turned their attention to me. Immediately, sharp black claws began to morph from my fingertips.

“This is a better time than any to level up, I suppose.”

Liora watched her brother get left behind with a heaviness in her heart.

“That idiot! What is he thinking?!”

Her eyes began to take on a yellowish tint but quickly returned to normal within the next second. Though she was worried about her brother, she knew he would be alright. Her priority now was to get the remaining students out of the building safely.

There were only nine students left alive, including the five fighters. It was a pitiful number, but they couldn’t dwell on it. They dashed down the hallway until they found the stairs leading to the second floor.

They quickly made their way down the building while disposing of any zombies in their path. The moment they reached the second floor, they dashed into one of the empty classrooms. As soon as they entered, they all collapsed in exhaustion.

Liora couldn’t help but look at the small number of students left. Excluding the fighters, there were only three students: 1 boy and two girls. The boy was slouching on the ground with his hand on his head, muttering what sounded like a prayer.

The girls weren’t in much better shape either. One of the girls was hyperventilating, while the other stood quietly with a blank look on her face.

Though this wasn’t unusual for her. Liora knew her as Isabella, and she was always by Victor’s side, calling him “young master.” Even now, the girl walked over to Victor like a robot and started examining him.

“Young master Victor, are you alright?” she asked, to which Victor scoffed and shoved her aside.

This action surprised Liora. She knew of Victor’s rotten personality, but after the apocalypse started, he had been acting differently. To see him exhibit the same behavior as before was troubling.

“So, what are we going to do next?” Victor asked with a bit of a condescending tone.

The vice president looked at him with a frown.

“For now, rest.”

“We have to go back for the other students!” This time it was the president who spoke up.

“She’s right, some might still be alive,” Damien agreed, his fist clenched tightly.

The vice president shook his head.

“We can’t go back! Anyone left behind is most likely dead, and we will be too if we go back. Right now, we should focus on exiting the building.”

Liora held her head down and nodded. There was a part of her that wanted to go back, but she knew that was only for her brother’s sake. If they went back now, they would only be putting themselves in danger.

A smile formed on Victor’s face as the vice president spoke.

“The vice president is right. At this stage, we can only move forward.”

His words only added to the grim atmosphere, but no one refuted them. After a while of rest, it was time for them to leave again. The halls were crawling with zombies, but they resigned themselves to fighting once more. The plan was simple: they would fight their way through the halls.

All eight of them slowly exited the room, with the five fighters at the front of the group, flanking and protecting the other three. Since their group was smaller, they moved much faster than before. They fought until the hall was littered with zombie corpses, and the stench of death was stronger than ever.

After a grueling couple of minutes of fighting without anyone getting hurt, they were now a stone’s throw away from the exit. But that was when things took a turn for the worse. A blood-curdling scream pierced through the chaos. Liora glanced back to see Isabella standing over president Ava with a dagger in her hand. Isabella’s eyes were just as lifeless as ever before she plunged the dagger into the president’s stomach.

Liora’s eyes widened in horror.

“Ava!” she screamed at the top of her lunges but before she could react, another body fell.

She heard the loud thud and immediately turned to see Damien’s corpse lying on the ground with a small hole was in the center of his head. Almost as if he was shot by something.

For a second, she couldn’t believe her eyes, but when blood started pouring onto the floor in large amounts, she finally realized it was real. The vice president couldn’t believe his eyes either. In that instance nothing made sense and he was consumed by rage.

“No! I’ll kill you!”

He raised his spear at Isabella, ready to drive it into her chest, but in the next instant, his head was decapitated as it flew several feet across the hall. Victor stood in the aftermath, licking the vice president’s blood off his finger as the vice president’s lifeless body fell to the ground. His eyes glowed a deep shade of crimson as two pointed fangs protruded from his mouth.

“Vampire,” Liora muttered to herself.

Hearing her words, Victor immediately turned his attention to her.

“Took you long enough, you filthy dog,” he spat. “The smell of you and your brother is nauseating. Speaking of which, where is the other puppy?”

Vampire! Why did it have to be vampires!

“M-My brother is dead. He couldn’t survive being left behind,” Liora muttered.

Victor scoffed and pointed at her with his finger. Immediately, a small orb of blood began to form.

“Makes sense. Werewolves are weak.”

If it came down to a fight, Liora knew she couldn’t win. It would take an entire pack of werewolves to take down one vampire, so she knew it was impossible for her to win. But she also knew that from the day he was born, her brother was the furthest thing from a normal werewolf.

The small orb of blood in front of Victor’s finger increased in size every passing second. Then, in a small explosion that sounded almost like a gunshot, the blood whistled through the air and pierced through her chest before she could even react.
