Chapter 259: An Ambush?
My meeting with the leaders in my pack had gone on longer than I expected. I was actually happy since it was an extremely productive meeting. We had covered the bases of everything that was to come.
I was actually happy. With everything planned out, I was confident that we could come out of this on top. It wasn’t until night had fallen that we wrapped everything up and decided to go back to our rooms.
I dragged my mentally drained body through the halls, feeling as if I was an undead creature sprung to life. But just before I got to my room, I happened upon someone. No, it was more as if they were waiting for me.
Isabella was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. She seemed more moody than usual. The moment our eyes made contact, she frowned.
“What took you so long?” she asked.
“Ah, so you were waiting for me.”
Without hesitation, she rushed towards me and wrapped her arms around my neck.
“We should go to my room,” I suggested, seeing how much she was sweating and how hard she was breathing.
“No, we can’t. Sylvie is there, I think. She hasn’t left your room since this morning,” Isabella said, sounding out of breath.
“Then let’s go to your room,” I suggested, but just as those words escaped my mouth, she sank her fangs into my neck greedily.
It felt as if two sharp needles had pierced into my neck, and soon I could hear loud gulps. Her breath felt warm against my neck. It was a feeling I knew by heart.
While Isabella gulped down my blood, I couldn’t hold myself back any longer. While she drank and gulped as if she was dying of thirst, I reached out and rested my hand on her stomach. Immediately it felt as if a warmth had washed over me but it was gone in an instant.
In a blink of an eye, she had retreated, jumping back at a speed most couldn’t even comprehend.
One moment she was drinking my blood, and the next she was a few feet away from me, looking panicked. Her face was flushed, and she was breathing even more heavily than before.
“What are you doing?! Why would you do that?!”
“I…”
Without giving me the chance to explain or get a word out, she rushed off using her vampiric speed to get away from me as fast as she could. Soon it was just me there standing by myself. I looked down at the hand which I used to touch Isabella’s belly, and I couldn’t help but crack a smile.
“I can’t wait to get this all over with.”
With that thought, I wiped the blood from my neck and continued on to my room.
’Isabella said Sylvie hasn’t left my room since this morning. She must’ve spent the whole day waiting for me.’
With that thought in mind, I turned the lock to my room and pushed open the door. When the door to the room was pushed open, it took a few seconds for me to register what I was seeing.
“Lee?”
Sylvie called to me in a shaky voice the moment I entered the room. She was scared. It was the first time I had heard her call my name like that. I had never seen her this scared before, but it all made sense considering the person standing behind her.
“Damian Dracule.”
I could hardly believe it myself when I said his name out loud.
What is he doing here?
He stood behind Sylvie with both hands casually resting on her shoulders. It was like the grim reaper standing behind someone fated for death.
“Sylvie, what are you doing?”
Sylvie had a knife in her hand, resting it just below her throat. Her hands were trembling, no, her entire body was shaking in fear but still, she held the knife against her throat.
“Lee, Sylvie can’t control it.”
Is he mind-controlling her?
I thought that wasn’t possible.
But then it dawned.
I was fooled.
I foolishly thought that no one in my pack could be mind controlled by him. Damian purposely let me think that was the case so I would let my guard down.
Sylvie is in danger. If anything happens to her, I’ll…
No, I can’t let my weakness show. I have to handle this perfectly.
I turned my attention to Damian, looking at him as if him being in my room was no big deal at all. I didn’t grant Sylvie any comfort. At that moment, I couldn’t. I had to be cold to her for the purpose of saving her.
“Damian Dracule, what an unexpected visit. Do you have business with me?” I said casually, placing my hand inside my pocket and stepping inside the room.
Damian’s expression was as blank as ever. His pale yellow eyes showed no emotion. It was as if I was looking at a soulless creature. With the way he was looking, I didn’t expect him to answer. I half expected him to lop off Sylvie’s head right in front of me, but I kept my composure.
“I have a message for you,” he finally said.
“A message? What kind of message?”
The moment I asked that question, Sylvie’s hand began to slip. It slipped until the knife was resting against her belly.
“Lee?!”
Sylvie called out again in panic, but I didn’t meet her gaze. I didn’t want to take the chance of taking my eyes off Damian. I felt it would be a big mistake if I did.
“What is the message?” I asked, taking a step closer to them.
Damian’s expression stayed the same as he answered.
“The sea witch said she wanted her daughter back and that I should kill the man who had led her daughter astray.”
Dammit! My eyes of deception aren’t working on him.
“The sea witch, is that what this is all about?” I forced a chuckle.
He must’ve found a way to get in contact with her. Damian didn’t answer my question and instead turned his attention to Sylvie, rubbing his hands up and down her shoulder. Watching it made my skin itch.
“Lee, Sylvie sorry,” she cried, tears lining her eyes and streaming down her face. It looked as if she wanted to say more but she could.
She was blaming herself.
I know her. That was the kind of person she was.
Her hands trembled as she pointed the knife against her stomach. Damian then leaned forward and issued his command.
“Kill it.”
The moment he spoke, and without a second’s hesitation, Sylvie plunged the knife towards her stomach. At that moment, utter chaos erupted in the room.
A whip made of bones burst through the wall behind Damian and wrapped itself around his neck. At the same time, the knife penetrated Sylvie’s skin. It all happened within the span of a second.
At this distance, I wouldn’t be fast enough to stop her from gutting herself, but luckily my wild cards had paid off just in the nick of time. The moment Damian issued his order to Sylvie, I summoned my two trump cards, causing time itself to freeze.
For a span of 5 seconds, time itself was frozen. The clock in the room stopped ticking, and apart from me, no one else was able to move. I took a quick glance at the ones who had made the astronomical event possible.
It was none other than Sköll and Hati. The two stood beside me, combining their powers. This was what they could accomplish when they combined their abilities. They had the ability to freeze time itself, though only for 5 seconds at a time before there was a cooldown period of roughly 1 hour.
With limited time, I burst forward towards Sylvie. It took me 2 seconds to get to her. She was frozen like the rest, the knife penetrating her skin, but it wasn’t deep enough to cause serious harm.
I pried the knife from her grasp and tossed it aside.
Damian was also frozen, even the rubble from where the dullahan broke through the wall was frozen in mid-air.
My main priority was Sylvie, so I lifted her up and ran. Facing Damian as I was now was suicidal. I had to evolve before I even stood a chance, and since he was coming after me, it meant I had to speed up my plans.
It meant that I had to execute everything which I had planned tonight!
Three seconds had passed since Sköll and Hati froze time, and I was already outside the room carrying Sylvie in my arms. Another two seconds, and I was already near the exit. I moved like a wild animal leaping through the building until I finally got to the exit.
It was that moment where I was finally at the exit where the 5 seconds was already up. Time returned to normal, and immediately without giving me time to breathe, something vicious burst through the walls towards me.
It was a purple serpentine dragon. Its mouth was opened wide as it tore through the walls to get to me. I barely managed to evade the attack by leaping back, away from the exit.
“That creature… I recognize it,” I mumbled to myself, and immediately as I did, I saw a figure walking through the rubble.
A figure with blood-red eyes, but I knew in my gut it wasn’t a vampire. Purple aura swirled around the figure as it walked towards me, and soon the dust was clear, and I could finally see their face.
“The witch of greed…”
She looked at me with bloodred eyes. Eyes that only contained hate.
“You killed my sister!”
