Chapter 227: The Battle Begins
Persephone looked at the crumpled wall with a blank expression. She merely covered her nose to block out the dust, then with a swipe of her hand, it was all cleared.
Cassian ignored her and marched his vampires inside the settlement. They crawled over the rubble, and immediately as they did, they were greeted by ghouls.
The ones who possessed organs that allowed them to fly were the first to arrive upon the scene.
“What are those creatures?” One of the vampires asked. His expression was that of mild curiosity.
While for Cassian, he somewhat knew what they were. He had heard stories of creatures with strange limbs attacking the city.
Plus, from scent alone, he could tell that these creatures were ghouls. The head of this small group of ghouls was one who had wings similar to those of a bee.
His beating wings created a strong gust of wind every time they were flapped.
The ghouls stared at the vampires down below them with eyes that held no fear, then with a raising of his hand, he ordered the ghouls to attack.
Without wasting another second, the ghouls descended from the sky to attack the vampires.
Cassian readied himself to kill them all in one fell swoop, but in the span of a second, everything changed. The ghouls changed directions as smoothly as the wind.
Instead of attacking the front with Cassian head-on, they circled around and attacked the vampires at the back.
Cassian moved, ready to retaliate. This little trick meant nothing to him. These ghouls were nothing but bugs. He could squash them with a single attack.
Orbs of blood began manifesting in the air as he readied his attack, but just then he saw another army of ghouls rushing his way, but what caught his attention was what they were saying as they ran towards him.
“We need to hurry and hold them off. We don’t have much time!”
“We need to make sure our leader escapes safely!”
Hearing those words, Cassian’s ears began ringing. He became red with anger as it felt as if his blood was going to explode out of him.
“That bastard is escaping?!” He roared, the words making him more angry.
At this point, he couldn’t care less about the ghouls. All he wanted was the man who killed his son.
In what sounded like a sonic blast, he ripped through the air, using blood to push himself off the ground, and just when he was in the air, the bee-like ghoul appeared in front of him.
“You’re in the air; you’re practically helpless against me,” the ghoul shouted.
Cassian didn’t even seem to notice the ghoul. He merely clenched his fist, and the ghoul’s head ruptured. It exploded, splashing blood, brain matter, all over his clothes. The ghouls fell lifeless to the ground and so did the others who tried to stop him from going forward.
For creatures who didn’t possess blessed quality blood, it was easy for him to kill them. He could control their blood, making them explode from the inside.
While those with noble quality blood were a bit different, he could still destroy their internal organs and, in some cases, give them a heart attack.
Only those with blessed quality blood were immune to his attacks. While behind him, a chaotic battle ensued.
The vampires spread through the community like a virus, while some were stopped by the ghouls.
Throughout the past weeks, the ghouls had received combat training from Selthia and Kumo. The two worked to teach the ghouls how to use their special organs. Plus, when they attacked the city, they gained the chance to level up.
Because of this, one ghoul was equal to one vampire in strength. The creature which was once the weakest species could now fight toe-to-toe with the race who considered themselves the strongest.
For that reason, they were happy to fight. Not just for their leader, but for the years of torment they suffered at the hands of the vampires.
Seeing how powerful the ghouls had become, the vampires were a bit frightened. It was as if they were possessed.
And soon, more creatures attacked the army of vampires. The lamias, led by their queen. The lamias hid inside buildings and attacked the vampires as they entered.
These buildings were riddled with traps, and seeing as they were specially built for lamias, it was hard for others to navigate them.
Their spears were coated in their venom. Due to the vampires’ healing factor, it wouldn’t kill them, but still, it would severely weaken them.
From there, all they needed was a well-placed blow to the heart to kill the vampires.
The lamia queen, on the other hand, had just evolved into an awakened Lamia, and with that, she gained a special skill: petrification.
She could turn others into stone just by looking into their eyes. A group of vampires rushed in, ready to take her life, but at the last second, her eyes glowed bright green, and they began turning into stone, starting from their feet until it covered their faces.
“What is happening?!”
“What did she do?!”
The vampires panicked when they saw their bodies beginning to turn into stone.
The lamia queen watched them with a smile on her face. Her ginormous figure loomed over them.
She found their panic appetizing. She watched and waited until every inch of them had turned to stone, then with one swing of her snake-like tail, she shattered them to pieces and watched them crumble to the ground.
In another section of the community, Léa was commanding the vampires who were once members of the Sun clan.
Seeing the girl who was normally holed up in her room at the forefront, the vampires felt proud.
They knew in their hearts that they were no longer the disgraced Sun clan. They were now the proud Lycan pack.
They felt no kinship with the vampires in front of them, only the need to protect their pack.
The vampires in front of them had eyes that glowed the same color of blood, but their eyes were the color of flames.
Léa was the one who initiated the attack. Her majestic flames lit up the night like a beacon, consuming the vampires rushing towards them with blood-hungry eyes.
This beacon of flame was like a signal to the vampires around her. A signal that stirred their blood, making them want to fight for their new home.
They attacked the vampires with ferocity, fighting with all their might.
The sound of war and the smell of blood permeated through the night as both sides were locked in deadly combat.
…
“The next generation of vampires in my pack will be hybrids,” I said as I sat waiting for Cassian in a cleared space.
It was a thought that just dawned on me. I never realized it before. Khalissi looked at me curiously, likely wondering what I was even saying.
“Since I will be the one activating their vampire genes, it means they’ll become hybrids like Isabella.”
“Yes, you’re right. But not just them. I feel the next generation of every race you turn will be different from how they originally were. Your werewolf venom is more amazing than you think. It allows you to rewrite a person’s genetics, making them stronger. It even adds a code that makes them loyal to you. Even now, we still don’t know the full effects of it.”
“Indeed,” I nodded.
She was correct. It was only because of this power that I managed to come this far. In this age, power was everything, and I could exchange it for loyalty. It was perfect.
I couldn’t help but smile before looking directly at Khalissi.
“I think it’s time you leave.”
She raised an eyebrow and began to look puzzled.
“Leave? But the leader of the Veylmont clan…”
“I’ll handle him. It’s time I began fighting my own battles. No tricks, no ambush, just a proper one-on-one fight between two people hungry for survival.”
“But you’re not nearly strong enough to face him.”
“I have the full moon doubling my strength.”
“That’s not nearly enough,” Khalissi shouted before grabbing my hand. “You’re too young. I can sense the bloodlust of the monster coming for you; he’s far stronger than you.”
“Fighting people weaker than you is how you grow weak. Not every battle will be a fair fight; I expected that.”
Khalissi shook her head adamantly. She clearly thought that what I was planning to do was a foolish choice.
I took her hand and rested it against my chest.
“Do you feel that?”
“Your heartbeat… are you scared?”
“I’m terrified and excited at the same time. It’s hard to explain. It feels like electricity is coursing through every inch of my body.”
It was strange. Tonight I may die. Tonight was the closest I have ever come to death.
It was coming, and all I could do was sit and wait for its arrival.
“Go find the girls. That witch Persephone is also here. They’ll need your help facing her.”
Khalissi smiled wryly.
“I know they would rather I stay here with you, but I’ll do as you command. I trust you… don’t die.”
“I won’t.”
She slid her hand down my chest and turned on her heels to leave. I sat and watched her figure disappear through the darkness.
Sitting alone, I then summoned Cerberus. The giant hound crawled from my shadow and stood beside me.
I slid my hands over his black fur and watched as smoke oozed from it.
GRR!!
“I’m glad to have you by my side, Cerberus. It will be just the two of us now.”
