Chapter 182: A Cruel Fate
As the tiny supernatural creatures danced above in the sky, illuminating the night sky, a lone figure stood on the streets. It was a man dressed in a black trench coat that fluttered in the night breeze. He had a tall, imposing figure that towered over most who walked on the busy street.
He had jet-black hair and eyes the color of dried blood. He looked like a man in his late forties with a few wrinkles, but his face was still vigorous. With a cold aura shrouding his figure, this man continued to walk down the street until he arrived at a mansion.
The man didn’t utter a word. He didn’t have to, as the gate to this luxurious estate seemed to open by itself until two figures appeared and bowed before the man. Two figures with faces as pale as ghosts and eyes as red as blood.
They bowed so low that their heads were almost touching the ground.
“Sir Veylmont,” one of the two vampires bowing their heads stuttered. “What brings you here? This is most unexpected.”
The man looked at them with a blank expression before speaking in an old, wise voice. This man spoke with an accent that seemed to only belong to him.
“I came here to speak with the head of the Sun clan.”
The two vampires looked back and forth between each other before returning their attention towards the man. It was a well-known fact that the leader of the Sun clan has been bedridden ever since the great war. And in that time, he has not received any visitors from any of the noble clans.
So why now?
And why the leader of the Veylmont clan?
Those were the questions going through the vampires’ minds. They couldn’t help but feel worried for their clan’s safety, but even then, they couldn’t dare go against the leader of the Veylmont clan himself.
“Follow us, Sir Veylmont, we’ll take you to him.”
With no other choice, the two vampires led the leader of the Veylmont clan into the mansion. The moment he entered, the first thing he noticed was the state of the place. It was a mess of bloodstains and broken furniture.
He stared in scorn when he noticed two vampires drinking each other’s blood very passionately on the couch. These vampires were servants, and yet they had the gall to behave like this. He saw it as disgraceful, and his image of the Sun clan further diminished.
The leader of the Sun clan was bedridden, and his daughter was a shut-in that hated the sight of blood or other people for that matter. In his eyes, this entire clan was a disgrace not worth being nobles.
“This way, sir Veylmont.”
The vampires hastily led him upstairs to hide the shameful acts that were taking place.
“Is the daughter of the clan still refusing to leave her room?” Sir Veylmont asked as he was led through the halls.
“Yes, the young miss still refuses to see anyone or drink blood for that matter. We have to wait until she’s passed out before we can force-feed her blood.”
“But that’s actually the easy part. The real problem is when she’s having one of her episodes and tries to kill herself. Even though she’s weak from not drinking blood, it still takes at least 50 of us to stop her every time, and every time we lose half that number.”
Sir Veylmont couldn’t help but think how much of a pity it was. With her power, she could’ve been a great ally. Maybe she could’ve led the Sun clan to the same heights as the Veylmont clan and the Dracule clan.
Soon they arrived at the entrance to the main bedroom. The vampires didn’t waste a second or even bother knocking before shoving the door in.
The moment the door swung open, they were hit with a pungent smell. The smell of sickness and death. Laying on the bed in the room was a withered vampire. He was so frail that his body looked like a dried-out husk.
His blond hair sprouted like weed covering most of the bed. Seeing this man in this state caused an anger to rise within the head of the Veylmont clan. Not because he had any close ties with this man. But simply because of the negligence the vampires showed towards their leader.
“Leave us,” he whispered in a calm, cold voice.
The vampires simply couldn’t disobey and left after bowing their heads. Soon it was only the two leaders in the room. The leader of the Sun clan, as if sensing someone else’s presence, opened his eyes and stared directly at him.
“Cassius Veylmont,” he whispered in a strained voice. “Is that really you?”
“Yes, it is me,” Cassius answered as he approached the bed. “I came to speak to you about some important matters. I’ll make this brief so you can rest. I’m here to relieve you of your status as a nobleman.”
“You can’t be serious?”
“Your family no longer has the power to live up to your status.”
“We still have noble blood.”
“That’s not enough anymore. Your house is a disgrace to us.”
“My daughter…”
“Your daughter is defective,” Cassius replied coldly.
“I know my daughter, but if we could arrange a marriage—”
“There are no noble houses willing to join with yours. Your daughter and you are too much of a liability. We appreciate your service all those many years ago in the great war, but we’ve humored you for too long.”
The clan leader’s pale face twisted when he heard those words. They were going to strip him of everything.
“Back then, none of you were a match for me. Neither you nor Damien Dracule. It is only because of my illness that you can talk to me like this.”
Cassius’s expression didn’t change.
“It doesn’t matter how powerful you once were. The issue is right here and now. You’re not fit to be the leader of any house, and neither is your daughter.”
“I’ll find someone to marry her,” the Sun clan leader said hastily.
“None of the other nobles will marry her to their heir. Unless you decide to stoop so low as to marry her off to any regular vampire.”
“I’ll find someone,” he repeated, his voice taking every ounce of strength he had.
Cassius stared at him coldly without saying a word. He found it all pitiful. He saw the man’s sickness as a result of his own weakness.
“My decision is final. You will be relieved of your noble title from this day forward.”
The Sun clan leader’s lips quivered in disbelief as anger rose from the bile of his stomach. He looked at Cassius with nothing but pure hate at that moment. Cassius didn’t stay a second longer and left instantly.
Cassius knew this clan had no future. The moment the word got out that they had been relieved of their noble status, even their own vampires would turn against them. Survival of the fittest is simply the way in Purgatory, but their leader simply wasn’t fit.
As Cassius stepped out back into the cold night air, he instantly felt something wasn’t right. His senses were screaming at him to go home. His mind drifted first to his last remaining son, Allucard.
The moment he felt something wasn’t right, he took off in a flash. He used his vampire speed to traverse through the city. He was nothing but a blur as he flickered from street to street until he finally arrived at his mansion.
He was hit with the scent of blood. Vile blood that to him smelled like sewage waste. The further he went into the estate, the stronger the scent got, as if something was rotting. He passed bodies of vampires that belonged to his clan, but he didn’t pay them any heed as he continued to search for his son.
“Allucard!”
He shouted, but he got no answer until he heard a disturbing sound coming from upstairs. It sounded as if someone was eating something, and he could smell raw flesh. He climbed the stairs, feeling a slight uneasiness settle within his stomach.
The first place he went was towards Allucard’s room, where he was hit with a sight he would never forget. He saw his own son, now a monster, eating the remains of one of his servants. The part of his eye that was supposed to be white was now black, and his iris was the color of blood.
Looking at the creature before him, he didn’t see his son. He only saw the monster he had become.
“Allucard, who did this to you?” he whispered in a heavy voice. “This is just cruel.”
They turned his son into a monster, and instead of killing him, they left him so the father would be forced to finish the job.
“Orchestrating something like this could only be the work of a monster,” Cassius snarled before approaching his son.
Allucard, now turned into a lesser ghoul, looked up at his father, but all he saw was flesh to be devoured. Driven by his primal instincts, he charged at his father, but he was easily restrained.
Cassius grabbed his son and hugged him in such a way where he couldn’t scratch or bite him. He hugged his son tightly before whispering something into his ear.
“I’ll avenge you, my son. You were met with a cruel fate, but the one who did this will live something much more cruel than this. That will be my final gift to you.”
With that, Cassius plunged his fist into his son’s chest and watched the life drain from his eyes as he hugged him tightly.
