Chapter 262: No Remorse

As I traversed the rooftops with Selthia in my arms, I realized there were quite a few people gathering. It looked like Kumo had done a good job of getting the word out. This reminded me that I really should have some sort of alarm system.

Something that alerts my pack members whenever there is an emergency. I was glad that I had spoken with the leaders today. They all knew the plan and would do their part without me being there to order them around.

It wasn’t long before I got to the gate, which wasn’t guarded since everyone was preparing for the war that was to come.

“Where are we going exactly?” Selthia suddenly asked when we got to the park.

“I’ve studied this city a lot since coming here, trying to figure out the best point of attack. I wanted to strike where it would hurt the most.”

I didn’t know anything about war or attacking a city, so I mostly relied on Selthia for research. I knew the city layout by heart. I knew which group of people lived where. Their strengths, their weaknesses. Everything that could aid me in battle, I knew it all.

It was after studying all these things that I came to a conclusion.

“Odeika…”

That was the most populated area in the city. It sat at the very center of Purgatory. In Purgatory, a lot of the supernatural races separated themselves from each other, but Odeika was where they all came together.

“Odeika is where I’ll launch the first attack. I just need to get there before I’m caught by Damian,” I explained.

“Carrying me is slowing you down. If you just stash me somewhere, then it would make things a lot easier. I believe that you can succeed.”

“That would be a good option, but with Damian coming after me, this actually helps clear my mind.”

“Clear your mind?” Selthia asked, looking confused.

“Yes, carrying a beautiful girl in your arms is like every man’s dream.”

Her face suddenly turned bright red.

“Wait, you can’t mean… you don’t actually think of me that way?”

“Hmm? Why not? You are beautiful, Selthia, and very attractive. Carrying you gives me the energy to fight. Do you really want to deny me that at such a crucial moment?”

Her head was swirling, and it looked as if steam was puffing out of her head. The face she was making made her look cute.

“It’s… not fair for you to say those things right now,” she said, turning away to hide her embarrassment.

“You kept asking me to leave you behind, so I thought I’d just come out and tell you the real reason behind my intentions.”

“…”

Her face was bright red, and for the moment, she had gone quiet.

The city was as peaceful as ever. At this hour, most were either going home or going to some party or event. For them, it was just a mundane night. One that they’ve lived for years.

“What do you think about me killing all these people?” I asked Selthia.

“What do I think? I think it’s wonderful that you’re finally going to evolve. I know it’s been bothering you for a while,” she responded with the same smile on her face.

Somehow, her answer didn’t surprise me.

“Most of these people are innocent. What I’m doing to them is practically the same thing the demons did to us. Most of the people here have family and friends…”

“Darling,” Selthia interrupted what I was saying. “You sound like a human.”

“I’ve lived with humans for most of my life. I went to school with them. There were times when I felt more like a human than a werewolf.”

“Yes, but there are things that are fundamentally different about us. You don’t have the same thought process as them. In fact, most people in this city isn’t even human. Taking a life means nothing to us. We’ve done it so many times that it’s practically second nature to us. We are programmed to kill; our mind, our bodies, everything about us is built for that cause. A wolf hunts so it doesn’t starve. What we are doing is practically the same.”

I understood everything Selthia said. I knew it well. Even before the apocalypse, I didn’t hold any particular love for anyone outside my family.

The thought of killing them didn’t disgust me. It didn’t cause me to feel fear either.

Did it excite me?

I tried not to let it.

Giving into my instincts wasn’t the way either. If I did, then just the scent of blood would cause me to kill everything in sight.

Ultimately, Selthia was right. I wasn’t human.

Fake pity didn’t look good on me.

I didn’t care about them, plain and simple.

Making my way through the city, I didn’t spare a glance at the people we passed by. I didn’t care about them anyway. What I cared about was the EXP I would get after killing them. The answer was to embrace my instincts and also not to give in to them.

“Hey, your wounds have healed,” I said to Selthia after some time had passed.

“Oh, yeah, they have,” she responded.

“That’s good. Take care of yourself, Selthia.”

“Huh?”

Before Selthia could question what I meant, I placed her down on the building we were currently on and leaped off towards the next.

“Wait! Darling, wait!”

Selthia called out to me from behind, but I was already gone. I told her I wouldn’t leave her, but I couldn’t keep my word. I didn’t expect Damian to catch up to me that quickly, and I didn’t want her to get caught up in what was about to come.

Damian was close. I didn’t know where he was, but he was close. It wasn’t like a scent or me hearing him. It was more like an itch at the back of my mind telling me I was in danger.

I increased my speed, moving as fast as I could, but even then, I couldn’t stop what was coming.

A creature that looked like a bat suddenly appeared in front of me. A heartbeat later, that bat turned into the man I was evading. At lightning speed, his fist went out towards my heart.

My body jerked on instinct, and that slight movement caused him to miss my heart by merely a few inches.

That few inches cost him everything.
