Chapter 3: First Battle
The scene erupted in panic as students tried to fight off their dead classmates. Damien and Jason were at a loss for what to do since they were in such close proximity to the students. One wrong step, and they could end up injuring or killing one of them.
I quickly grabbed Sarah by the hand and bolted down the hall. My nose had picked up on something, blood moths. A whole swarm of them was fast approaching, as if they were drawn in by the blood. The horrified screams grew louder as we dashed through the hall with the sound of windows shattering behind us.
Before I could get far, they were already upon us. I quickly opened the door to a lab on my right and dragged Sarah inside with me.
“What’s happening?” she asked, panting from exhaustion. Without any explanation, I led her to one of the desks and told her to stay put.
“Don’t move. I’ll come back for you.”
Meekly, she nodded and said, “Okay.”
Just then, the door to the room was broken open by one of the blood moths. It stared at me with its giant red eyes, then zipped through the air at a terrifying speed. I protracted my claws at the same instant and ducked below its first attack but not before clawing at its wings. I managed to tear off a hung chunk of it, leaving the beast struggling to keep flight.
The blood moth squealed loudly while flapping what was left of its wings in desperation, but it was too late. Within seconds, I was in front of it, and in one swift motion, I relieved the moth of its head.
[Blood Moth killed. 3 core points obtained.]
I stared at the dead moth on the ground, and an unsettling feeling settled in my stomach. At the same time, a wet, sticky substance ran underneath my chin. I wiped it away and realized that it was drool.
“I’m salivating?”
It was then that I realized the feeling in my stomach was hunger. The more I stared at the moth, the more I craved. Soon, my teeth began to change shape, replaced by pointed fangs that could remove limbs with little to no difficulty. Every fiber of my being was yelling at me to rip open its chest and devour the treasure that lay inside.
What that treasure was? I did not know, but I followed my instincts and plunged my claws inside the dead monster’s chest. My pointed claws slipped in with ease, and I felt a squishy organ against my palm. I grabbed hold of it and pulled it out.
I couldn’t say I was too surprised by what I pulled out as it was the beast’s heart. Strangely, it looked just like a human heart except it was purple in color. Sticky purple liquid dripped from my fingers as I examined it. Not wanting to waste another second, I brought the heart up to my mouth and sunk my sharp fangs into it. From then on, I couldn’t hold myself back and devoured the heart until nothing remained.
It smelled horrendous and was extremely bitter, but I couldn’t spit it out since my werewolf instincts prevented me from throwing up anything that had nutritional value once it entered my mouth.
[You have consumed the heart of a Blood Moth. 6 core points gained.]
It looks like I get double the original points if I consume its heart. Just as I thought that I could, a swarm of blood moths crashed in through the window. These creatures were weak, so I wasn’t worried about facing them. They all attacked at once, but I used my superhuman agility to duck below their attacks.
Then, using one of the chairs, I pounced into the air and used the wall as leverage to propel myself toward one of the blood moths. My claws sliced through the air like a knife, creating a crisp swish as I split the beast in two. Using my agility and superhuman strength, I weaved through the swarm cutting them down with lethal precision all while dodging their attacks.
I killed a total of six blood moths and consumed their hearts.
[You have consumed the hearts of a Blood Moth. You have gained 54 core points.]
[DING!]
[You have ascended to Level 2:
+20% Increase in strength
+20% Increase in Agility
+20% Increase in Stamina]
[You have unlocked one ability from your Bloodline]
[Ability: Thermal Vision
Description: Allows the user to see the heat signature of any living thing. This ability isn’t affected by solid objects.
Note: Keep leveling up to unlock traits from your bloodline.]
My Bloodline? I wondered if all werewolves have this. I decided to try my new ability, and immediately, as I thought that, the world around me changed color. Everything turned black and white except for figures shown in red. I assumed these were the living things. No I knew it for a fact now, I could see the heat radiating off them.
I could see a red-colored outline of Sarah, who was still hiding behind the desk. Through the walls, ceilings, and floors, I also saw several red outlines. Some of them were human, while others belonged to the blood moths.
There were also blue humanoid figures with red dots on their heads. I assumed these belonged to the zombies. More of them popped up by the second, spreading through the building like a virus.
This place would be littered with them within an hour. Damien was right; barricading ourselves inside the auditorium would be the best choice, and since it had no windows, we wouldn’t have to worry about more blood moths flying in. I deactivated my thermal vision, and my sight returned to normal.
Afterward, I went to check on Sarah. She was curled up underneath the table, covering her ears and muttering something. It sounded like she was saying a prayer. I gently touched her on the shoulder so as not to frighten her.
“Sarah, it’s me.”
“Liam!” she quickly climbed out from underneath the table and wrapped her arms around me in a hug. “Thank God you’re alright.”
I stood there awkwardly, unsure of how to respond to her embrace and the tears now streaming down her face. In an awkward display, I touched the back of her head and gently stroked it just like they do in the movies whenever a girl cried into the mc’s arms.
“We should go,” I finally said after a moment.
She nodded and wiped the tears from her eyes. As we exited the room, I activated my new ability. It would be an invaluable asset in avoiding the monsters present in the building. It worked perfectly as I was able to navigate through the building without encountering any zombies.
As we neared the auditorium, I noticed the heat signatures of a group of students, along with the heat signature of several zombies. At this stage, the herd of zombies was unavoidable. I was banking on using the approaching students as bait until I picked up a familiar scent among them.
I slowed my pace and waited for the group of students and the zombies to collide. When they did, I stood at a distance to watch it all unfold. There were three fighters among the group. They were the ones fighting off the zombies while the other students stayed to the side and watched.
The first was a boy named Lukas. He had nice brown hair and a devilishly handsome face. He was also a second-year student and the vice president of the student council. He wielded a spear and brandished it like a Spartan, taking down the incoming zombies by targeting their heads.
The second was the president of the student council herself, Ms. Ava Forel. She had long blonde hair and a figure that could make you mistake her for a supermodel. She had a bubbly personality and was loved by everyone in the school. She had a staff in her hand that seemed to control the wind around her. She used it to slice the zombies in half. Her ability was frightening, but my eyes were instinctively drawn to someone else.
The person who stood out the most to me was the secretary of the student council, Liora Lycann. She had long black hair and a heart as cold as ice. She too was a beauty. In fact, she had the entire first and year swooning over her.
She was just a second year but there were already students who wanted to make her the student council president. She excelled at everything she did, whether it be sports or academics. She moved with unmatched speed and agility as she disposed of the zombies one by one.
Within our pack, she was the one gifted with exceptional agility. It was her skill. My twin sister, Liora, was only second to one person when it came to agility and speed… me.
