Chapter 98: The Flame of Death

On the night of the full moon, the Nyx pack’s howls grew even louder. Their demonic bloodlust covered our village like a dark cloud.

I ordered everyone to get in position. I made sure that their fear of the Nyx pack wasn’t stronger than the fear of what would happen if they disobeyed me.

“Alpha,” the chief of the guardians, approached me. “Everyone is ready at the north, south, east, and west walls.”

The chief of the guardians was a tall man with a mop of red hair on the top of his head. He had a scrubby ginger beard and looked as if he was in his late 40s. His name was Olaf.

When he looked at me, he was clearly distracted by something and was trying hard to keep his composure.

“That is good. Is the wolfsbane ready?” I asked.

“Yes, we await your orders.”

Right now I was standing atop the wall at the south gate, where the battle would take place. I gazed out into the forest, where a sea of yellow eyes was staring back at me.

“What about the fire arrow? Is it also ready?” I asked, to which he quickly nodded.

“Yes, my lord. But… what is it for?”

“Just fire when I tell you to.”

The full moon wasn’t out yet, but I could still feel a bit of its energy washing over me.

“Umm… my lord,” it seemed he was ready to ask about what was really bothering him. “About your skin…”

“What about my skin?”

“… Never mind, it’s nothing.”

Chief Olaf dismissed what he was about to ask and instead bowed his head, then took his leave.

“Sigh, since he won’t ask, then I will.” Isabella, who was standing quietly beside me, suddenly spoke up. “Why is there steam coming out of your skin as if you’re about to explode?”

I smiled at her question, then answered.

“It’s a product of me becoming an alpha.”

She raised an eyebrow.

Ever since my rank evolution started, my body temperature has been rising. Now it was so high that steam started coming from the pores in my skin, and anything I got close to would get scorched.

“A similar thing happened to me on the night of the last full moon,” Isabella said.

I found it strange how Isabella and I shared the exact same bloodline after I turned her. If we followed the example of the others I turned, then Isabella should be a primordial hybrid. But instead it is listed as just Primordial, the exact same as mine.

Maybe it’s because she’s the first person I turned.

What even is this primordial bloodline I inherited? And what’s its connection to the Wild Hunt?

These questions have been plaguing my mind ever since I met Death. My guess was that the four horsemen of the apocalypse are responsible for the monster invasion. But of the four, I’ve only met one.

I remember Death mentioned something about a contract. Could that have something to do with it?

After this is all over, my first order of business will be to make sure this pack is strong enough to resist the wild hunt or any other threats that come along.

“They seem to be on the move now,” Isabella commented, dragging me from my thoughts.

“So they are,” I responded simply.

The Nyx pack slowly circled around our walls just as I had predicted.

“They are spreading their forces thin. Wouldn’t it be easier to assassinate them like this?” Isabella questioned.

I see her reasoning, but her way of thinking was false.

“There is nothing easy about assassinating a group that has over 200 members. A massacre is the better option. And that can only be done when they are clumped together. So we’ll wait until they are all attacking the south wall just as we planned.”

Isabella nodded her head in understanding.

“I trust you,” she whispered softly.

“Just like clockwork, the Nyx pack surrounded us and started attacking the north, south, east, and west walls.

The werewolves I had positioned on the north, west, and east sides began bottles of wolfsbane on the werewolves who dared to try and climb.

The wolfsbane worked like acid, burning their skin and blinding them. They soon realized that climbing these walls would prove to be impossible.

The plan worked perfectly as more of them began piling towards the south wall since this was the only wall that didn’t have werewolves dumping wolfsbane on those climbing. My plan to get them all together worked perfectly.

They climbed the south wall, making wild sounds as they ascended. They acted as if victory was already theirs.

In the middle of the sea of werewolves, I spotted Danzo. His bloodlust overpowered everyone else’s. That was the moment I finally decided to give the order.

“Fire the flame arrow.”

Olaf didn’t waste a second before the arrow took flight. Its beautiful flames danced through the night sky almost like a shooting star.

Neither the Nyx pack nor Danzo paid it any mind. None of them knew the weight this single arrow carried.

He thought that I was dancing in the palm of his hands, but the truth was that he was dancing in mine. Sentient beings are all predictable creatures.

All I needed to do was get inside their heads, and I could figure out what they will do next with pinpoint accuracy. Roran, Danzo, and even Kaelen made it all so easy for me.

They presented themselves as puppets, so I used them as such. None of them could see further than their own claws. Which is why I am partially covering sidereal humans to be the better species.

They use their heads rather than relying on brute force. They used their minds and built intricate cities and technological marvels while we werewolves sat in the backlands living in shabby huts and filth.

In this apocalyptic age I aim to build a kingdom. One that can survive against the forces that are coming, whoever or whatever they are.

As I stared at the beautiful flames in the sky, I couldn’t help but feel hopeful for the future.

Though to the Nyx pack and Danzo, this flame meant nothing. None of them knew that this single arrow would be the reason for their deaths.
