Chapter 261: Trust
Chapter 261: Trust
“The witch of sloth?”
I recognized the man holding her was her brother. I found it strange she was sleeping at a time like this, but I figured it must have something to do with her ability.
Those golems must’ve been created by her. Seeing the opportunity before me, I charged toward them while they were distracted with attacking Selthia.
Immediately as I did, a stone hand shot from the building adjacent to me. I narrowly evaded the attack by twisting my body out of its path in mid-air.
’They saw me.’
The wall on the building molded itself to form a giant stone golem. This golem was much larger than the ones Selthia was facing.
I glanced in the direction where the witch of sloth was to see she was still asleep, but her brother was staring right at me.
Selthia didn’t notice my presence since she was busy fighting for her life against the golems.
The massive golem slammed down its fist towards me but before his fist could even get to me, I bent my knees and launched myself off the ground.
I thrust my claws forward, crashing into the golem like a missile, shattering it into pieces.
“Ahh!”
Just then, I heard a loud scream.
It was Selthia.
I turned around to see she was impaled by a spear that dug into her side.
Some of the golems wielded a spear made of stone. Selthia clutched her side and fell to her knees, her trident clattering beside her. With such a wound, she no longer had the strength to wield the heavy weapon.
Immediately as she fell to the ground, more of the golems surrounded her with their spears raised.
Selthia squinted, expecting the worst, but all the golems crumbled and fell to the ground in an instant.
One swing of my claws was all it took to take them out. Compared to Cassian and everyone else I had fought, they were weak.
It went to show how much stronger I had gotten, but it still wasn’t enough.
With the pieces of the golems on the ground around us, I approached Selthia who was still squinting on the ground, expecting to be impaled.
I rested my hand on the top of her head, and immediately she opened her eyes in surprise.
“Darling?”
“Your wound is pretty bad. It should be healing. Why is it not?”
Now that I took a look at her, she was covered in scratch marks that should be healing.
“It’s their magic. Something about it is stopping me from healing. It hurts.” She said as she clutched her stomach.
I made the right choice coming here. If I didn’t, then I could’ve lost her.
“Seems we have no choice then.”
Seeing as she was injured, I lifted her up in my arms.
“Darling, don’t. You shouldn’t trouble yourself.”
Selthia squirmed around, her face flushed.
“If you’re injured, then I’ll carry you, at least until you’re healed.”
Though she was in pain, her face was still flushed red as she was clearly embarrassed.
It was unlike her; she was normally more bold and less shy. But maybe it had something to do with the fact that she was nearly killed just a few seconds ago.
I felt her body relax, and she leaned against my chest and whispered something.
“Thank you.”
With Selthia in my arms, I turned towards the witch of greed and her brother.
I couldn’t fight while holding her, and I didn’t want to leave her alone with golems spawning about.
My current objective was to escape. With that in mind, I summoned Cerberus and the other shadow hounds.
The four queen witches were a tough opponent. They ruled over the city for centuries.
At my current level, I was confident I could defeat her, but that wasn’t my intention for now.
I wanted to save the honor for someone else. If I’m going to evolve tonight, then I wanted the same for the members of my pack.
Khalissi said the reason my shadow hounds hadn’t evolved yet was because I had yet to take the first step. If I evolved and they too faced a strong opponent and won, then they too could evolve.
Though I was carrying Selthia, I reached out and stroked Cerberus’s soft black fur.
“I have a tough opponent for you today, buddy. It will be hard; do you think you can handle it?”
“Grr!”
“I’m counting on you to handle this. We both will get stronger by facing stronger opponents. Go fetch their heads.”
“GRRR!!!”
Cerberus let out a loud growl in response. His war cry lit a fire under the other shadow hounds.
Not wasting another second, Cerberus burst forward with a 50 of my shadow hounds charging behind him.
Their ravenous growls assaulted the eardrums of anyone close enough to hear it.
Even the witch of sloth was forced awake by the sound. Her eyes snapped open, and she leaped from her brother’s arms.
A strange pink energy surrounded her as she raised both hands into the air. Immediately, more stone golems began to crawl from the ground and from the sides of buildings.
Her magic was impressive. She and her golems would make an excellent addition to my pack.
It was a shame.
In the end, she would only be the means by which my hounds evolved.
With Cerberus keeping her distracted, I decided to make my escape. I had wasted enough time, and Damian could be heading after me at this very moment.
As I leaped from building to building, a few golems spawned and tried to grab at my heel, but they were too slow to catch me.
Selthia, with her arms around my neck, held on tightly as I leaped through the air.
“I’m slowing you down. You should’ve just left me somewhere while you left on your own,” she whispered.
“Enough of that.”
“It’s my fault, isn’t it? The reason they came here is because of my mother. If staying by your side means putting you in danger, then maybe I should just go.”
“I thought sirens mate for life. Are you really ok with leaving?” I asked.
“Of course not, but…”
“Just leave it to me. If you trust me, then just believe that everything will work out fine as long as I’m here.”
It wasn’t easy to put your full trust in someone. It’s like diving from a skyscraper, believing that the person down below will find a way to catch you.
I understand if she could do it.
“I will.”
Surprised, I looked down at her to see a warm smile on her face, and for some reason, it made me smile too.
“I trust you, so I will leave it all to you.”
