Chapter 271: A soft landing

Being careful not to trip over the steps, we rushed up the stairs. Behind us, the thick fog spread through the building as it slowly climbed towards us.

I didn’t think Damian could detect us. He was most likely covering as much area as he could when we got caught up in it.

I hope the girls are alright.

Soon, Selthia and I arrived on the roof of the giant building. The door leading to the rooftop was closed, so I was forced to break it down. The building we were in currently had 110 floors. The fog was at the 80th floor and was still climbing its way up.

I stood at the edge of the building, looking down at the fog slowly climbing towards us.

“What are we going to do?” Selthia asked.

“I’m not sure. I don’t see a way to escape this.”

Damian’s fog covered a large portion of the city. Frankly, if it continued rising, it would be impossible to avoid. This made me even more worried about the others.

“All we can do for now is wait,” I said, taking a step back from the edge and turning towards her. “If anything happens, I’ll need you to run.”

“But…”

“That’s an order.”

Selthia was about to refute, but I quickly shut her off. In the end, she nodded her head and agreed, even though she was unhappy about it. With nothing to do, we waited. We sat beside each other on the ground, and I watched as the fog climbed up to floor 101.

It seemed as if it had no intention of stopping or slowing down.

“If I was stronger, I would be able to help,” Selthia suddenly mumbled beside me.

“It’s not just you. We all need to get stronger,” I answered.

“I still haven’t improved much in using the trident. I think part of the reason is because I’m on land. Even the abilities I got with my new bloodline, I haven’t been able to master,” she sighed, collapsed on my shoulder, and began closing her eyes.

“Hmm? I thought you were improving more after you began training on your own.”

Her eyes immediately shot open.

“Wait, you know about that?”

“Maybe?”

A small wrinkle formed on her forehead as she began pouting.

“Were you spying on me in secret?” she asked, looking at me suspiciously.

I kept an eye on everyone in my pack. The shadow raven ability has proven to be extremely useful.

“I was just curious as to what you were up to,” I answered.

Hearing that, a small smile appeared on her face, but as if to hide how she truly felt, she returned to her previous pouty expression as she rested her head against my shoulder. To comfort her I reached out and began stroking her hair.

“Shadow ravens, huh?” I mumbled to myself.

An idea had begun forming in my mind.

Stretching out my hand, I summoned a shadow raven in the palm of my hand. The creature was small and light to the point where I could barely feel its weight in my palm.

Luckily, it had a heat signature, so I could see its outline in my hand.

With the shadow raven in my palm, I stood up and walked to the edge of the building.

“Darling?”

Selthia called out to me, causing me to turn around and meet her gaze. She had a worried look on her face.

“I’m going to try and get us out of this.” I said.

I had a plan in mind, but I wasn’t sure if it would work. It was a shot in the dark.

Standing at the edge of the building, I sent the shadow raven in my palm into the fog, which was now at floor 107. I watched as the shadow raven disappeared into the fog. Simultaneously, I began to summon more of them around me.

I summoned all 24 shadow ravens that was left and sent them into the fog. My plan was to use them to draw Damian’s attention.

I don’t think that just any creature could draw his attention since down in the fog below there were ghouls moving about. What made the shadow ravens different, however, was that he knew they belonged to me. He knew they were my eyes, so to speak.

Seeing a flock of ravens surrounding him was bound to raise a few questions.

It was the perfect distraction and it worked like clockwork.

The fog began receding. The ravens flew in the opposite direction of where we were, causing the fog to move towards them.

“The fog is gone,” I said to Selthia.

“Wait, really?”

“Yes, we have to go.”

Without wasting a second, I pulled Selthia towards the edge of the rooftop. Feeling the strong wind on her face, she instinctively held onto me. At the same time, I swept her off her feet and lifted her up in my arms.

“Darling, what is going on?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly.

The darkness made it impossible to sense what was going on or what I was planning to do. I could’ve taken the stairs, but descending 110 floors would take too long.

“Just hold tight, okay.”

Even though she had her misgivings, Selthia nodded and wrapped her slender arms around my neck.

“I trust you,” she whispered, and the moment she said those words, I took a step off the edge into a free fall.

The cold night air seeped into our skin, making us shiver as we plummeted through the sky. Our fall lasted almost a minute until we finally landed softly on the ground. The moment my feet touched the ground, I bent my knees and landed in a crouching position.

Being a werewolf, my feet were a natural shock absorber. As long as our bodies were strong enough, we would always have a soft landing no matter the height from which we jumped.

If a vampire was to attempt this, for example, they would either break their legs or create a crater from the force of their landing. I did neither of those. There were no signs on the ground to even show that someone had jumped from such a height.

With us safe from the fall, I placed Selthia back on her feet, but just then I spotted the heat signature of a strange creature leaping through the buildings.

What first drew my attention was the speed at which the creature moved.

From its outline, I could see that the creature had pointed ears and a tail swaying behind it.

“Sylvie?”
