John found himself in a public bathroom stall. Apparently whoever he was, he was in the middle of having a crap before he was replaced.
“What? Why in the world would they start me here?”
In his hand he was holding a cell phone with the news open on it, talking about a surge of violent outbreaks across Japan, people randomly assaulting other people, biting and tearing at them.
“This is a damn zombie outbreak, isn’t it? I’ve seen that Walking Dead show. Now I know what he meant when he said I wouldn’t have a peaceful life.”
He finished up in there and when he started to pull his pants up, a sharp pain pierced his skull. A ton of background information was loaded into his mind, giving him his identity in this world.
He was an OC not part of this worlds canon. John Wayne, 34, American Ex-pat and a teacher. He moved from Dallas, Texas to Tokonosu City, Japan for a change of pace after a messy divorce. He took a job teaching English at Fujimi Academy. This was his first full day on the job, and was having a nervous poo before going to his first class.
“Wait that’s all my background information? And its even my same name? So what do I do now?”
He was confused, but if there was a zombie outbreak he would have to take action. His son got him the How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse book once for Christmas as a gag present, but it basically boiled down to what he thought was common sense.
Get a weapon, get supplies, gather people, head to the country. If possible, go where its below zero so the zombies will just freeze solid. Oh and do this as soon as possible.
“According to my phone its April 3rd, so not likely to get somewhere cold unless I go up a mountain. Umm…fuck lets just get out of here.”
John washed his hands and looked at himself in the mirror. Yep, he looked very similar to how he did when he was in his thirties…albeit with a few more wrinkles, and a lot more silver hair. He sighed. He was decent looking but looked more like he was in his fifties not his thirties.
Those…doctors? said my looks were mostly cosmetic. I do feel a bit more energetic but I am still an old man.
He was wearing a red silk button up shirt, blue jeans, and a pair of black boots. He had a rather large belt buckle on as well. He had some questions as to why a teacher would wear such a get up to school, but had no one who could answer that. He felt around his pockets and found a set of keys and his wallet. He thought about the keys for a moment, and then smiled. He didn’t need to go find transport later, he had a vehicle in the staff parking lot.
He dried his hands and went out into the hallway. It was empty, the students already in class at this point. He knew he was late to his, but he had a pretty good guess that it wouldn’t matter if the attacks were already all over the news. A small part of his conscience told him he should go protect his students, but he wasn’t really a teacher and he didn’t exactly have a weapon to protect them with. That was what he would need first, but where?
Thankfully, he had the memories of his orientation from the other day, so he kind of knew the general layout of the school. What was in a school that he could use for a weapon though? They didn’t exactly have an armed presence in schools in Japan. As he was contemplating his choices a voice behind him spoke, a beautiful female voice his new memories recognized.
“John-San, are you lost?”
He turned around, and in front of him was a tall, curvy blonde woman wearing a white blouse, white lab coat and a long black skirt. Despite her modest attire, she had the largest breasts he had ever seen on a woman and they stood out prominently. From what he remembered from the short interaction he had with her, she was had a very bubbly personality, ditzy, and seemed to inadvertently flirt with everyone. He wasn’t sure how she became a school nurse, but he could only imagine her bedside manner would be amazing.
Not the time idiot.
“Good Morning Miss Marikawa, yes I appear to be lost. Can you point me towards the gym please?” He was going to raid the sports stores. He would rather have a fire axe, but if he could get a bat, that would serve the same purpose.
“Its Shizuka please John-San, no need to be formal around me. And yes, I can take you there, I was heading in that direction myself.”
“Thank you Shizuka…San.”
She smiled at him stuggling with using honorifics, and they started walking down the hallway. She didn’t question him why he wasn’t in his class, which he was grateful for. If that news report was anything to go by, there was already an outbreak, and he wasn’t going to wait around for it to catch him.
They talked about inconsequential things on the walk, and which was actually quite insightful for John. She wasn’t an total airhead, just mostly free spirited when things didn’t matter much. He did mention the attacks that were on the news, but she wasn’t sure what was happening either.
They made it to the infirmary which was co-located beside the gym so she had faster response times to anyone injured during physical education. Separating there, she hinted for him to meet up with her at lunch, which he agreed to, and John continued down the hall to the gym.
This school was huge, and had multiple gyms setup for different sports and classes connected to each other, along with a fairly large sports field. There were a couple classes ongoing, but he stayed to the sides of the room to not interrupt the classes. He poked his head into a few storage areas, but didn’t have much luck finding anything for a weapon.
“A plastic floor hockey stick isn’t going to do much…maybe if I channel my inner Canadian I could use it.” He mused to himself. He was…or rather his original body was half-Canadian, so it might work…he left it there in the rack.
He continued his search until he found another gym, this one empty. Along the side of the far wall was a rack of…swords? He walked over to the rack and looked at it. There were eleven wooden swords on it, with a spot missing a twelfth. The swords were blunted, hiltless and nothing fancy, but would probably work better than a bat to deal with Zombies. He reach down and picked one up and was surprised how light it was.
“How would this hurt anyone? It can’t weigh more than a pound or two. Maybe a bat would be better.”
“Why would a bat be better than a Bokken? Did you need some help Sensei?” another feminine voice spoke behind him.
Turning around, a female student he didn’t recognize was standing in front of him. Purple hair, sharp blue eyes, and a beautiful yet expressionless face. She was tall, nearly as tall as Shizuka, but with much slimmer proportions. Her breast were still quite large, particularly for an Asian woman, though her clothes hid it fairly well. She was wearing the school uniform, which consisted of a white top with green accents, and a green, knee length skirt. In her hand she was holding another wooden sword, presumably the one missing from this rack.
“Good Morning. No I was looking for a bat, but I found this rack of swords…err…Bokken? So I was thinking I could use one of them instead but they are not very heavy.”
“Melee weapons such as these bokken are not made to be heavy Sensei, they need to be balanced, heavy enough to be durable, and light enough to use for extended periods of time.” She took a stance and did a few practice swings showing him how powerful the slash of such a weapon could be. “These are weapons, not bats.”
Okay, I don’t want to be hit with that thing, that should work then.
“I see. Well thank you for the demonstration Miss Sword Master, I will endeavor to give these the proper respect in the future. Now-“
“GGGGRRRRAAAAHHHHH!!!!”
Just as John was going to introduce himself to the girl, a loud growl echoed throughout the gymnasium. Screams could be heard from the next room over, people panicking and more of those inhuman growls.
“Well fuck me, here we go. Girl, stick close and hold onto that weapon. We might need it.” John hefted his bokken, then thought about it and tucked five more in the crook of his left arm. He was just going to use it as a club for now, and if he encountered more calm, rational people, he can arm them as well. He started making his way back the way he came.
The girl watched at his back for a moment, a weird expression showing on her face for a moment, then shrugged her shoulders and followed this strange teacher towards the sounds of danger, instead of away from it like any normal person would.
It wouldn’t be the first time she was in danger.
They moved into the next gym, and finding nothing, moved towards the next. He was moving back to the infirmary, with plans to collect the school nurse along with as many medical supplies as she can carry. They might be invaluable over the next however long they were stuck here.
It had absolutely nothing to do with the fact she was a hot blonde who was flirty with him.
Probably.
When they made it to the final gym, there were bodies already on the floor, but no zombies to be seen. Blood was spread all around the corpses, wounds from bites torn limbs bleeding the now cooling bodies out everywhere. Sword Master girl started making her way over to the fallen, some who might have been her fellow classmates. John followed but kept a healthy distance back.
“Don’t touch the bodies! The news was saying something about crazy people who looked dead suddenly standing back up and attacking others.”
She looked at him askance but stayed back from the fallen corpses. They were dead alright, bite marks on limbs and necks. They appeared to be just students, the kids probably the first attacked when the zombies entered the room. John was about to say something more when a PA announcement went off.
“Attention all students and staff! Attention all students and staff! A violent outbreak has taken place on school grounds! All students are instructed to follow staff to safety at once!!”
“C’mon girl, let’s move.”
“Yes, Sensei.”
“I Repeat. A violent outbreak has taken place-“
Bang!
Clatter!
“EEEEEE! ARGH! SAVE ME! STOP IT PLEASE!
SAVE ME!”
GWAAAAAAHH!
“SAVE ME I’M GONNA DIE!”
*Brrrpt*
They both paused, listening as a school secretary was brutally killed over the PA. Thankfully the PA shut off, cutting off her screams. John gave her a moment of silence before moving on, they needed to make it to the infirmary and get supplies before leaving this god forsaken school. He started moving then realized the girl wasn’t following him. He turned back, and she was looking at the corpses still on the floor. They hadn’t turned yet, and he wasn’t looking forward to seeing that happen.
“You okay?” He asked, looking at the girl. He expression seemed serious, which is understandable in this situation, but she also appeared calm, which was frankly amazing. If he wasn’t warned that these worlds were going to be matters of life and death, and if he didn’t have that return teleport thing, he would probably be shitting his pants.
She didn’t say anything but just nodded, hands gripping her Bokken tighter, the white knuckle grip telling him she wasn’t completely okay.
“Take a deep breath and relax your grip girl, I need you to stay focused so we can both get out of this alive.”
She looked at him, closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths. When she opened her eyes, she looked at him again, her sharp gaze more focused then before.
“That’s better.” He then swapped his sword to his left hand and held out his right. “My name is John Wayne, the new English teacher.
She took his hand and shook it. “Busujima Saeko. Third-year and captain of the Kendo team. It’s nice to meet you Sensei.”
“Good, now lets get to the infirmary. Miss Marikawa should have a some medical supplies, we will then make our way to the cafeteria and grab food. Then finally we can then get out of here. I have a vehicle in the parking lot.”
She nodded again. Yeah she seemed very calm about all this.
They moved to the hallway, and in front of them was the first zombie, or whatever the locals were calling them right now. It was alone and had its back turned to them, as it was swinging its arms into a window, trying to get into the infirmary.
GWAAAHH!
John closed the distance to the zombie, raised his bokken above his head and smashed it down as hard as he could. The zombies head collapsed inwards, spewing grey matter over the area, but much to John’s dismay, his shoulder popped and the sword tumbled to the ground as his arm went limp.
“FUCK ME!”
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, just popped my shoulder out of place. Don’t get old kid, its a trap.”
John dropped all his bokkens, then using his left hand, he grabbed his right arm and pulled it to chest level, then pulled straight out. The shoulder popped back into place, albeit painfully. It wasn’t the first time he had partially dislocated his shoulder, and the physiotherapist showed him this method to get it back in place.
“SSSSIIIITTT Errr…damn that hurts every time.”
“You’re not that old Sensei.”
He was about to say he had grandchildren older than her, but remembered that this body they put him in was only in its 30s.
“No? Well maybe not but some days it feels like it. Shall we?”
They opened the door, which was unlocked but turning a knob was beyond the ability of a zombie. Inside was Shizuka, trying to get a zombie that was on one of the beds to calm down.
“BACK AWAY Shizuka-San. Busujima go!”
Saeko darted in front of him, and preformed a similar overhead strike on the zombie, without the added dislocation of a shoulder. The Zombie skull was crushed in, and Shizuka started to scream.
“W-W-WHAT DID YOU DO! YOU KILLED HIM! WHY DID YOU-“
John grabbed her and kissed her. He didn’t try to invade her mouth, but just needed to stop her brain from spiraling. He considered shaking her, yelling at her or slapping her, but this was simple, wouldn’t raise tensions more and he wouldn’t dislocate his sore arm accidently. Once she realised what was happening, he pulled back. She looked at him with a confused expression.
“There, you thinking straight now? These people are attacking everyone, all over the city, and everyone who gets bit becomes one. She did what she needed to do. She did nothing wrong. DO. YOU. UNDERSTAND?”
She continued to look at him, then unexpectantly for John, she lunged at him and kissed him back. Their tongues intertwined and John lost his train of thought for a few moments.
What is happening? She kissed me back? I barely know her!
She broke away from him and looked him in the eye.
“Mmmm, you taste good.”
He wasn’t sure what happened, but long as she was with him, he didn’t care. They needed to get out of there. Just then, the door burst open.
“SHIZUKA-SAN! WE NEED TO GO- Why are you hanging off that guy!”
