Chapter 54 – A Wild Pink-Haired Menace Has Appeared

GRRAAAHHH!!!!!
John beat on the metal gate with one of the bokken, making as much noise as he could. The zombies meandering around in the street all growled, then started shambling towards him.
“Are you sure this is a good idea, Sensei?” Saya said beside him, watching nervously as the approaching horde started pushing on the gate, causing it to tremble under their combined weight.
“Nope. However, I need them closer for this.” He replied, pulling out his Firewall spell scroll. “I can only cast this one once, but with this many zombies, I don’t even know if that Humvee could push through without breaking something.
The majority of the survivors were already loaded in the two vehicles, with only Saya and Saeko remaining by his side.
After their conversation, Shizuka grabbed her keys and went and sat behind the wheel of the Humvee. She told him that she needed some time to think, but wasn’t mad about the accident that occurred.
“If something happens well, it was meant to be. My horoscope did say I would get an ‘unexpected gift’ yesterday. I just thought it meant being saved!” She had said to him with a little laugh.
Kenzo, the former bus driver, was driving his truck. Tsunoda was watching over him to make sure he didn’t drive off with the truck, although John didn’t think he would. He really needed to teach some of the former students how to drive once they got somewhere safer.
No, I will get Kenzo or one of the other adults to do that. I can’t do everything.
With everyone ready and the zombies congregating at the gates, he chanted the spell. “Firewall!”
The scroll caught on fire in his hands, turning to ash so quickly that if he had blinked, he would have missed it. A heartbeat later, a giant plume of fire burst into existence just on the other side of the gate, setting the horde on fire.
“Oh god. Sensei, that stinks so badly!” She said, the pink-haired girl covered up her nose and mouth with her uniform. Even Saeko, normally stoic, frowned then pinched her nose to stop from smelling it.
John had to agree, the barbecued zombies smelled like burnt meat and crap. However, he didn’t take his eyes off them, making sure they didn’t manage to burst through the gate before the flames did their job.
The heat was intense; the zombies didn’t last long in those immolating flames. He couldn’t see through them to see what was happening to the rest of the horde, though. Were they just marching into the flames? Or were they holding back from the edge?
*CLANG*

He kept beating on the gate while they waited for the time to run out on the spell, trying to keep drawing the zombies towards the trap.
At the tenth minute, the spell ran out, the bright wall of flame disappearing. Nearly all the nearby zombies were turned to ashes, leaving only a handful remaining on the other side of the gate. John handed the bokken off to Saya, then drew his sword.
“Miss Takagi, stay behind us. Saeko, with me.” He said, slashing the gate with his sword. The sword parted the hot metal like butter, causing it to swing open. They took a few moments to clean up the remaining zombies, their swords making short work of the slow-moving monsters.
Monsters? They were humans not that long ago.
The thought caused him to pause. He was thinking of them as monsters, faceless enemies, but he never even tried to ‘Cure’ them yet. He was so focused on moving forward, rescuing people, and escaping the city, he never even thought to see if he could return them to normal. Not that he had the mana to do more than eight to ten at a time before his mana tapped out.
“John-Sama, are you okay?” Saeko said beside him, her steely purple gaze boring into him. Her voice had a slight hint of concern.
He shook his head. “I am fine, just had a thought, is all. Thanks for asking.”
He pulled his car token out of his pocket and set it on the ground. He channeled some of his mana through it, and it expanded, transforming into the Mad Maxx car. He whistled softly, looking over this masterpiece.
All black with a large supercharger sticking out of the hood, the car was definitely a powerhouse. The rear hatch was removed, with two large fuel tanks mounted in the trunk, just like it was in the movie.
However, there was an issue he hadn’t anticipated. A couple of issues, actually.
First, it was right-hand drive, with an old four-speed manual transmission. Not a huge deal, he would just have to get used to shifting with his other hand.
The second problem was the fact that it only had two seats, the two extra fuel tanks sitting where the rear seats used to be.
He looked over to the two women accompanying him. “Sorry, I only have one extra seat. Saya, you might need to go get on back-“
“No! I’ll sit in Saeko’s lap!” Saya said, cutting him off. She looked a little sheepish when he frowned at her. “Sorry, Sensei. I just wanted to be able to talk with you for a bit. Besides, I have the radio.” She said, waving the radio at them.
Each vehicle would have one with it, the spare room having a small crate of them. They were the rechargeable type, so as long as there was power, they would be able to charge them when they stopped.
He sighed. “If Saeko doesn’t mind, then it is fine. It isn’t like we are going to get pulled over for lack of seatbelts.”
Saya turned to the other girl, who just shrugged, not really caring.
John waved to the other two drivers, then got in the car. The girls got in the other side, and after some jostling around, Saya managed to get comfortable sitting between Saeko’s legs. They started down the road but had to stop almost immediately. A middle-aged man and woman came out of a nearby home, waving them down. The man had a bat in his hand
“Was that gunfire and blazing inferno you!” The man asked John through the passenger window.
“Yeah, that was us. We are leaving the peninsula. If you want to escape with us, get on the truck now. We can talk more later.” John said. If he could save more people, he would.
“Let… Let us get our daughters.” The woman said, talking before the man could. The man just sighed. “Yes. Just give us a few minutes.”
“Bring any non-perishable food and drinks you have too!” Saya said to the retreating couple, then turned back to John. “Are you just going to trust everyone?”
“No. Just the opposite. Other than you two and the rest of the people from the school, I trust none of them. However, they barricaded themselves in their home, following the government’s orders. Because of that, I highly doubt they are bad people, unlike that man who attacked Rei yesterday.” He replied, laying out his argument. “If we are going to survive, we will need people with different skillsets. I don’t know what either of them or their daughters is capable of, but right now, we need every advantage we can get. Even if it’s just night watch, extra bodies won’t hurt us.
Logistics will become a nightmare as we gather more people, but I cannot in good faith leave people to die when I can help. It is just who I am.”
“Logistics hun, well that will be easy enough in the short-term, but as time goes on, we will have difficulty gathering food. Potable water should be okay in the short term, but once the power goes out, we will have issues. Also…” Saya started going over a variety of issues that John hadn’t had time to think of yet, let alone come up with solutions for.
The family came out of the home and piled into the back of the truck a few minutes later, and John started to drive out of the neighbourhood towards the police station. Saya continued talking, bringing up issues she saw with trying to keep so many people alive, bouncing her ideas to mitigate those issues off him.
John was impressed.
Isn’t she just a kid? I swear I am talking to someone who works in emergency management or some sort of city planner.
“You seem quite knowledgeable about trying to keep people alive, Saya. How did you learn so much?” He asked her, turning down another road.
“My parents. I wanted to follow my father into politics, and he said I should know a bit about everything. That way, ‘you will know when someone knows what they are talking about, or if they are just blowing smoke up your ass’. My mother was a high-profile investor overseas when she was younger, so she made sure during school breaks we always travelled around to different areas she still has interests in, to see how different industries operate. From farms, mines, oil platforms, pretty much everything.” She said, giving John a bit of insight into her youth.
Doesn’t sound like she had much time for vacations or relaxation.
For her part, Saeko remained silent, only quietly grunting once when Saya lay on her chest. The smaller girl was nestled between her breasts, gesticulating with her hands as she was going over different issues with John, causing both their breasts to jiggle a bit.
John tried to ignore the extra stimulation while he was driving, but one thing was for sure. He was adding a clothing store to the list of stops so they could replace the torn garments they were wearing.
The convoy pulled up to the police station with minimal issues. John left Kohta and the two girls he had shown how to use the rifle and crossbow behind to guard the vehicles, taking Rei, Tsunoda, and Saeko with him inside. He also brought Alice’s father, Isamu, and the new man, Kei, with them to help carry anything they found out. Isamu had his fireaxe again, and Kei had his bat.
“We are looking for firearms and bullets, but keep your eyes out for anything that might be useful. If there is a locked door, no blowing off the locks, I have the key right here.” John said, patting his sword. Tsunoda nodded, the only one of them with a firearm.
They broke into the building fairly easily, the locked door proving no hindrance to his magical weapon. There were only a couple of zombies roaming around, which were dispatched easily. It took some time, but they eventually found the armoury, its door secured.
With a few quick strokes of his sword, the armoury was opened up, revealing a rack with several rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Along with a locker full of ammo, it was an amazing haul for their first stop.
“Don’t bother with the bean bag ammo. Anything we need to shoot, we will need to kill.” John said, stopping Isamu from adding the non-lethal shotgun rounds to the pile. They only had so much room at this time.
*Bang*
*Bang*
“Sensei! We’ve got a problem!” Saya’s voice came over Tsunoda’s radio, the static not able to mask the fear in her voice.
“He heard. We are coming.” Tsunoda replied, hefting his shotgun.
The warning and the rifle fire coming from outside ended the looting of the station, the group picking up their spoils and rushing outside. Tsunoda rushed ahead of them all, and soon the sounds of his shotgun going off echoed through the station. That made John all the more concerned, pushing his body harder, every step jolting his spine.
He stumbled outside to a crowd of hundreds of zombies approaching the vehicles. Kohta and his team were on top of the Humvee, firing their weapons, trying to slow the approaching horde.
“Load up the vehicles! We need to go!” He shouted, drawing his pistol. There were too many enemies for them to handle, at least without preparing the ground first.
He cracked off a few rounds with his pistol, knocking down lines of zombies in the crowd. The high-caliber pistol, causing more damage than any normal weapon should normally be able to do. The vibrations from firing quickly sent shocks down his spine, making him stumble, nearly dropping his pistol.
“John-Sama, here, let me help you.” Saeko said, helping him stand. He leaned on her as they made their way back to the car. She pushed him into the passenger’s seat, then climbed in on top of him. Saya was in the driver’s seat, revving the engine.
“Wait! Can you even drive?” He said, pushing the pain aside for the moment.
“My first time. Don’t worry, I was watching you.” She said with a big smile on her face. She then slammed the car into gear and popped the clutch.
The convoy tore out of the police station, the squealing tires of a six-hundred-horsepower muscle car being driven by a teenager leading the way.
John had never been more terrified in his life.
