- Chapter 8 – Deals, Contracts, And Unwise Spending Habits
John and the three beast folk made their way out of the slums towards the adventures guild. This was the first time he had traveled with them outside of the slums and he noticed a few things. People made way for them, but there was distrust and animosity in those gazes. Parents would pull their children away from them, adults would speak to each other in hushed tones while glaring at them. It was really disconcerting. It looked like the three of them wanted to hurry up, but they matched his pace, which he was thankful for. They knew of his “Old Injury” story.
As they got closer to their destination, the looks improved, more adventures and people who were tolerant to beast folk races being more prominent in numbers in this part of town. One group of kids even said “Hey there goes The Lineage of the White Wolf” which was Bazan’s parties name. They entered a large square, and a massive building that almost looked like a castles keep was on the other side.
“And we are here. Welcome to the Meritoni Adventurers guild John.” Bazan said.
The main building was a cylindrical structure made of unfinished stone, towering several stories high, the roof of the structure appeared to have a parapet encircling the entire circumference with a red tiled roof. On each side of the main structure were long rectangular additions, also made of stone, with many large windows inset into fancy arches. The entryway looked like something you would see in front a castle, a large dressed stone archway leading to two massive doors that put the healers guild to shame. It was a very imposing structure.
“Holy crap that is big! Why do you need such a big guild hall?” John asked.
“Well there are well over two hundred of us on any given day attached to this guild, but in times of emergency, other guilds will send support, and we need to make sure there is space to house the visiting adventurers.”
He nodded. It made a kind of sense. It was like military redundancy, always have more than you need, so when you need it, you already have it. Businesses couldn’t survive on that model, but government agency’s needed to. Though he thought they had told him before that the Adventure’s guild was separated from the local lords and their government administration. Another thing he would chalk up to being a fantasy world thing.
Inside the building was equally impressive. In the center of the room was a massive stone column that stretched skywards, past several floors before disappearing into the ceiling. Around the base of the pillar was a circular reception desk with three female receptionists, all busy with a line up of people waiting their turns for whatever was needed. Tables and benches surrounded the outside of the room, with groups of different adventures seated, some discussing jobs, others just hanging out. On the left side was a curved staircase going upwards to the second floor, which also had a balcony looking down on the main floor. There were several exits and doorways out of this main hallway from what he could see at a glance. And it was busy.
The healers guild had nothing on this place in terms of traffic or grandeur.
“Hey Nanaella! Where is the boss at?” Bazan shouted at the just freed beast folk bunny girl receptionist. The busty, blue haired, blue eyed bunny girl looked over at them. She was easily a F cup, her professional looking uniform unable to hide the size of her chest in the slightest. It was a light purple top with a white shirt underneath, a red tie at done up at the proper spot at her neck. He couldn’t see her pants due to the desk being in the way, but she looked very slim considering her considerable… assets…
Why am I so damn horny today?
“I haven’t seen him for awhile. Check the dining hall.” She called back in a musical tone, then turned back to the next adventure party in her line.
“This way.” He said, pulling John away before he could get a better look at the girl. There were not any rabbit beast folk in the slums that he had seen, and from the brief glance he got, she would have fit in well at a certain mansion some people of culture might remember.
STOP THINKING LIKE A PERVERT!
He really needed to get laid, yet another thing on his to do list.
Nearly dragged from the main hall, Bazan brought him to a nearby room down the left side corridor. Inside were several tables and a long wooden bar counter. At one of the tables were two beast folk and a man, playing cards. Several empty mugs were on the table, along with a plate of bar snacks of some variety John didn’t recognize.
The first beast folk looked like a wolf man, black hair and ears, dark skin, blue shirt and black pants. He was slim and unassuming. The one next to him was also a wolf man, but looks like he ate another three wolf men due his massive size. He had the same skin tone and hair colouring as the first one, and also was wearing a white chefs coat and an orange apron and tie.
I like this guy already, never trust a skinny cook!
The final guy was a human. Middle aged, white skin, short, spiky white hair, and quite muscular. He was dressed in a simple brown tunic and white shirt, and dark brown pants. He had three noticeable scars overtop his left eye as if he got clawed by some massive cat.*
“Hey Boss, I got someone I want you to meet.” Bazan said, walking over to the trio. Basura, and Sekiros just shuffled off to the side and sat down at a table near the door. John walked over to the table, where the white haired man stood up.
“Boss this here is John, the weird healer I told you about healing people in the slums for free, John, this is Brod the guild master.”
Brod offered John his hand, and he took it. The pressure this man was able to put out nearly crushed John’s hand. He squeezed back to no avail.
“It’s good to meet you. Bazan won’t stop talking about you, makes me think your his boyfriend or something.” Brod said, in a deep voice that you knew could be heard in a crowd if he raised it. He released John’s hand, who pointedly did not rub it or secretly think about casting heal on it.
“B-boyfriend? I-I am straight damn it! Why do you always do this to me Brod?” he sputtered, denying the accusation.
“Well you don’t have a girl friend, and you keep saying you are going to ask someone out but you never do, so I thought you were just deflecting.” Brod teased the man. Normally from what John could tell, Bazan was the sly crafty joker, so seeing the tables turned made John laugh a bit.
“Well jokes aside, what can I do for you.” Brod asked John.
“After talking with the Lineage of the White Wolf, they thought I should talk to you about a possible work position in your guild. I don’t have any problems healing beast folk as you can guess, and I assure you my rates are much less than any of my competitors.”
After talking with his friends and other people in the slums, apparently the healers in town charged by the spell, and even the weakest spells heal and cure were ten silver a cast, if it was even given as an option. Many of the healers were charging a gold coin or more for High Heal alone, forcing people into debt for minor injuries. He figured he could under cut them and charge two silver per person for a single spell, and no more than five silver total if he had to cast it more than three times. And if they were actually poor, he would do it for free.
This was easy money and training. He didn’t know what was coming, but DEN didn’t put him in this world just so he could drink and look at huge tits. That was a bonus though.
He did have questions as to why they would charge so much for what was essentially free, other than the healers experience.
Brod looked at him, then over at the skinnier beast folk who was still sitting down. The man nodded, and Brod nodded back and turned back to John. “I think we can make a deal, come sit down in my office, let’s talk.” Gesturing to the seat beside where he was seated a moment ago.
After a quick round of negotiations, John was hired on as the guilds “Training Hall Recovery Specialist”. He was even provided room and board, though they had to go clear out the room he would be living and working out of in the training hall. Apparently, the guild used to have an on-site healer at all times, but due to the tensions between the healing guild and adventures guild, that hadn’t been a thing for a long time.
He signed a contract for a year, with very generous working hours and time off, with the stipulation he would be available incase of emergencies. He would be paid by both the guild at a rate of thirty silver a month, and the adventures that came to him would pay between two and five silver per session. In the case the adventures couldn’t afford it, the guild would pay for them and take it out of their pay later.
It was an amazing deal. Maybe it was that Monster Luck skill at work.
It turned out Galba, the skinnier beast folk, was actually the vice guild master, and handled most of the hiring and money related things within the guild. He also was the butcher. Yeah, butcher and they butchered monsters to serve as food, not just at the guild but all over the country.
The larger man was Gulgar, who was the younger brother of Galba. They did look a lot alike, if you squinted real hard. He was the chef at the guild. He said he was going to put on a spread tonight to celebrate their new employee joining. Had a special drink just for him to try. He had a loud laugh and seemed quite jovial. The other two were smiling into their cups. This seemed like a great group to be working for.
After a couple hands of cards, John stepped out. He had already thanked Bazan and the rest of the Lineage of the White Wolf, they had things to get prepared before they went out and hunted that drake. Silly meat heads, he loved them like brothers even though it had been less than a week since they met.
He walked the contract over to the healers guild to be sealed. It was already done, but they still needed to know where their healer was employed for the year. It was late in the afternoon already, and John was already ready for a nap.
Entering the building, he couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast to the adventures guild again. There was just one receptionist, who had no customers, just standing behind the counter. This time it wasn’t Miss Kururu, but another attractive young woman. Long chestnut hair, fair skin, soft brown eyes, and a modest C-cup chest. She had red bows in her hair, two on her long side bangs and one larger one behind her head. Her dress was much more modest than Kururus, a fairly simple white dress with dark red shoulders and waist coverings. She gave off the girl next door vibes.
“Welcome to the Meritoni Healers Guild, How may I help you today?” She called out to him as he came up to the counter.
“Hi, my name is John, a G-Rank healer, and I am just dropping off a contract.”
“Thank you, one moment and we will- WAIT! You have a contract with the adventures guild?!” She cried out.
“Umm…yes? Is there a problem?”
“Well no problem per se…” She looked at John again as if for the first time. He was still wearing his disco ball armour, though he had bought a few pairs of simple black clothes he could wear underneath it. His sword was strapped to his side as well. If it was just at a glance, one would easily mistake him for an adventure as well. It was a house made out of cards, but it was enough to make someone think he was an adventurer. “It’s fine. Can I have your card for a moment as well please.”
John handed her the card and she disappeared into the back room. John almost walked around the counter to see what was back there, as every time he came here, they always disappeared back there.
She came back in a few moments. “I can raise your rank to F** if you like. The guild dues are higher, but you get access to another spell tome.”
“Oh what spell?”
“Poison, Paralysis, and Sleep Status recovery spells.”
“And what is the cost for the tome?”
“Twenty silvers, and your dues will be five silver a month.”
He had twenty-five silver remaining. He didn’t like spending all his cash, but with this contract, it wouldn’t be long until he made it all back and had extra to spare. Not to mention having a more status recovery spells available if cure wasn’t enough would greatly benefit everyone involved. He risked it and bought the tome and paid for the next month of dues. He received fifty copper back in change for the dues he already paid, so he wasn’t completely broke.
“Well thank you. Oh I didn’t catch your name?”
“Monica” She said sweetly. Yep, definitely the girl next door.
“Well thank you Monica. I hope you have a quick shift. I’ll see you in a month!” And with that he left, and returned to the inn to check out of his room and start his new life in the adventure’s guild.
John made his way down stairs at the adventure’s guild. He had all the spare clothing he purchased in his bag, all freshly cleaned from the inn. They were sad to see him leave so soon, but they gave him a few silver back for his his remaining time left.
He stopped at the bottom to catch his breath. If he was going to have to climb up and down those multiple times a day, he would have to rethink about wearing his armour all the time. It was a good idea to wear it in the slums, but here at the guild he shouldn’t have any issues. He might need to go clothes shopping tomorrow.
The training hall was the size of a fairly large school gym, about two hundred feet or long and and one hundred and twenty feet wide, though the floor was all sand. Large windows lined the tops of the walls, illuminating the room with the last rays of sunlight for the day. There were barriers up forming a hollow rectangle in the center of the room, leaving room for running on the outside and whatever training was done down here on the inside. His room was apparently on the left wall near the middle, with the patients room next to it.
He huffed his way over, feeling the strain from all the walking he did today coming back to bite him. He had tried healing himself before, but it didn’t really help.
It’s probably because it isn’t actually an injury but atrophy. Least I am not being chased by zombies.
He made it over to his new room and entered. He wasn’t alone. The bunny girl, Nanaella, was in there, with a bucket of water and a cleaning rag. She was bent over his bed, wiping down the headboard. The short orange skirt she was wearing lifted up, show a white pair of underwear. It didn’t ride up high enough to tell what colour her tail was though.
Does it match the ears or is it a white cotton ball. People of culture want to know….What am I thinking?
“Ahem” He said announcing his presence.
“Eeeekk” She let out a cute squeak, literally bouncing and turning around. She had very shapely and powerful legs apparently. “I-I’m sorry.”
“Umm…for what?”
“I-I-I dunno. You startled me.”
“I am sorry about that. Thank you so much for cleaning the place.” He looked around. Stone walls, no window to the outside, only the training area. It was a fairly large room, twenty feet by twelve feet, with a large bed, a dresser, an armour stand and a desk and chair. It wasn’t fancy but it was good enough for what he needed. A large lantern was burning on the desk, providing enough light for the bunny girl to work by.
He dropped his bag beside the dresser and peeled off his armour and weapon. The stand worked fine for it and he decided he was only going to carry his sword for now on, unless he was heading out of the guild. It was a huge weight off his shoulders.
He turned around and noticed she was still there, holding the rag to her chest. He hobbled over the bed and laid face down on it. He touched his back and cast heal, even though it was in vain, he couldn’t help but try. Maybe the placebo effect would kick in.
“Ahh this is so nice. How do you find working here Miss Nanaella?” He turned his head towards her. She was still holding the rag to her chest as if it was a shield to her massive weapons she was hiding.
I need to get this shit under control…crap I never even introduced myself…so much for good first impressions.
“It’s really good…Mr. Brod treats us receptionist like family, and Mr. Galba and Mr. Gulgar are practically his family already so it has been really good.” She replied nervously.
Well better late than never.
“I’m sorry, I am in a bit of pain here and completely forgot we haven’t been introduced. Please call me John.”
She looked down at him, and pushed the arm holding the rag to her side and gave a little bow. “My name is Nanaella, though you seem to already have known that.”
“Yes, Bazan said it when we came in together earlier. I don’t always have the best memory, but I try and remember the important things, Miss Nanaella.”
“Just Nanaella is fine, John-Sama. Do you need help? Can I get you anything?” She asked. She was blushing for some reason.
“Not unless you know a masseuse nearby? Or someone able to give me a back rub. Otherwise, I need to get up shortly, Gulgar said something about a meal and a drink, and I don’t want to miss his cooking.”
“I-I don’t.”
“That’s okay. It was a long shot anyways. I just need a few minutes of rest, and to not put that armour back on today. Are you coming to dinner as well?”
“Ah…yes. All the staff will be there.”
“Oh good. Everyone seems like a big family here, it is making me nostalgic. I miss my family.” He murmured the last at barely a whisper, though for Nanaella, it came out clear as day with her impeccable hearing as a Rabbit-man beast folk.
He is hurt and lonely she thought, wondering how she could help this man she just met.
*I’ve read the LN and I don’t think he ever told Luciel (the actual MC) what happened, so I always assumed it was an ex cat girl GF who slashed him and not some monster. Its my AU Canon anyways now =)
** No where is it stated canonically what level most of the spells are at other than at A-rank you get purification, (that I found anyways. He pretty much went from G rank to C rank to A rank, but spells were not discussed. ) and possibly High Heal as Botaculli was a A rank healer I believe.
I am wrong, it does in vol 2 ch10 of manga and I had forgot. It was further in then I was rereading as the canon has been accelerated, though B rank and A rank spells are not discussed. Adjusted the story now. If you are a new reader, pay this part no mind. =)
