“It was a serious question, Alec… why are you charging me more for the Gatcha shop now?” John asked, looking up from the list in front of him.

“I thought it was pretty self-explanatory, John. You are no longer a new contestant here, and you now have your own foundation of skills and magic. You no longer need the crutch of the Gatcha draw as much as you did when you first started. Why do you ask? Regretting not buying a Special Tier Item when it was half off?” Alec replied, still chuckling at John’s exasperated expression.

“If I am honest, yes. Are there any other surprises you’d like to toss at me? Maybe tell me my body is even more broken than I thought?”

“Oh tons more, John! But if I tell you, it will ruin the surprise.” Alec replied, grinning widely. “Now, any questions about your last dive before we get to your stats?”

“A few, but I doubt you will answer them,” John said, scrolling through the list again.

“Humour me. What are your questions?”

“Well, to start with, this AU – Awakened gibberish. Is that the being in the nightmare I had?” He asked, remembering vividly floating around in that cerulean sea. 

“Ahh, that is something we added here from DEN. It wasn’t part of the actual Manga since it was never finished. For now, let’s just call it the beginning of a history lesson for you and leave it at that.”

“Not ominous at all… fine. How about all these ‘feelings’ with the girls?”

“It is fairly simple. Unlike Takashi, you are emotionally available for all of them, not just being an edgy teenager who is just trying to survive. This doesn’t just apply to the girls; Kohta and Tsunoda are also developing because of your influence. Kohta in particular, since you didn’t put down his interest in firearms. Takashi didn’t even want to learn how to use the weapons that could literally save their lives, and it was driving a wedge between them.” Alec replied, giving John more insight than he expected into how his companions were thinking.  

“That… it is good to know that I have had a positive influence on them at least.  Ahh… one more question, I guess… that canon-breaking thing. There are zombies everywhere. Why would letting them off that peninsula be that critical to the canon of the show?” He asked, curious about what was happening with that.

“John, did you notice how you completed thirty-three percent of the canon of that world already? It has been what, three days? The canon was not long and all within that city. You saw the cables guiding the horde when you were on top of that building, yes? Those were for the Japanese Self-Defence Force to be able to make strafing runs on the undead from the safety of aircraft. Now, imagine what would happen if you unleashed another horde into that city, one coming in on the other side of those cables?”

“Oh no…”

“Oh yes, John. You might have saved your group then, but you have significantly shortened the time remaining for the city to remain a viable place to stay. Remember that for whenever you return there.”

“Wait, my skills are improving? And I can get new skills? I thought I had to do that through the Gatcha?” John asked, amazed at the changes to his list.

“Not quite, John. That first quest reward is quite the powerful cheat item. It has some side effects, but it will let both you and anyone else who eats it will learn skills much faster than what someone is normally capable of on their own. What is that rule on Earth? It takes a hundred hours of focused training to become proficient in most skills. Well, Substance X will reduce that to about fifty hours for the same effect.

As long as you keep taking it while training some sort of skill, you will get better at it faster. It doesn’t let you be lazy and just gain the skills automatically; you still need to focus and try hard. You just reap the rewards of your hard work faster. Oh, and as a further bonus, it will slowly build up your tolerances to most status effects, like being poisoned or stunned, though that is much slower.” Alec explained at length.

“Seriously? That is amazing. Oh, why is it a pill? It was a disgusting drink in The Great Cleric.” John asked, thinking of all the different applications he could use it for now.

“That is something you will have to learn about whenever you return there. I can’t tell you everything you know. It will ruin the surprise.”

“Fine. Now… explain to me that new quest? Why do I need to take the virginity of five different women? Isn’t that a bit… well fucking ridiculous?”

“Is it? Right now, two of your party members in The Great Cleric are virgins, along with the three girls in Highschool of the Dead. I won’t even bother mentioning the other three worlds you have already unlocked. Honestly, so far, only StarCraft will prove difficult to find yourself in a harem full of willing women, virgin or otherwise.” 

“But five of them? How many people do you expect to be interested in an old guy like me?” He asked, though he suspected the game was rigged to be favourable for him… just so a bunch of perverts could watch him get laid.

“When is the last time you looked in a mirror, John? Other than your hair, you don’t look a day over forty now. Sure, many people want a partner in their own age range, but many women like older men. Be it the maturity, stability, and security age generally provides, or just having daddy issues, there are plenty of women who will be interested in you. Hell, there is a certain drunk elf in Infinite Frontiers that is almost as old as you actually are that could tick off that box.”  

“Bah, I bet that suit still smells like beer… reminds me I need to do laundry whenever I go back there-” He replied sarcastically, remembering that elf, then paused.

I needed to gain gunnery skills there, right? Using that Substance X pill and the training program…

“Alec, let’s skip the stats for the moment. How much to improve my magic one level?”

“Fourteen for the next level, then twenty-one for one after. These two will be a seventy-five and one hundred percent boost to that stat.” Alec replied, having a good idea of John’s plan now.  

“Add my stats to my mana pool then, and can I get one draw of the stats Gatcha? With the other dice this time?” 

“Sure. Leaves you with 5650 tokens. Do you want anything else?”

“I’ll take my normal five draws on the eroge. The rest can wait until I return. I doubt there will be much I need there that I don’t already have.” He replied, already planning his return to Infinite Frontiers in his mind. 

“Alright, well here ya go,” Alec said, motioning with his hand. Six large, pyramid-shaped dice floated over to John, each a different colour. “Each colour represents a different stat. Give them a good throw.”

John picked up the dice and, with a shrug, just started pitching them across the room. They bounced all over the place, apparently made of some sort of super-elastic material, travelling much further than he expected. They ricocheted off the world doors, the furniture, the walls.

One bounced off Alec’s head and landed in his glass. Another one, he could have sworn he heard Xiolain yelp from somewhere as one of the die dissapeared behind a hidden curtain.  The tiger woman stalked out a moment later, the offending die stuck in her massive cleavage. 

“I believe this is yours, sweetie.” She said, giving him a wink as she dropped it on the table beside him, then swayed her hips all the way back to the side of the stage, blowing him a kiss before she disappeared again. John just shook his head.

“Nothing can be simple here, can it?” He said to Alec, who was fishing the di out of his drink.

“No… apparently it can’t. So let’s see, your stats have increased by eighteen overall. Not bad. Here, review your stats.”

John looked them over, nodding. He could feel a slight improvement in his body. That would do.

“What about the eroge?” He asked, wondering why that wasn’t spinning like it normally did.

Alec laughed. “Well, you complained about it, so we let our intern decide on how we could ‘Spice It Up!’.  Please step through the Black door to enter the ‘Bonus Zone!'” He teleported and was standing beside the Black Door, bowing towards John. 

“What?”

Loud carnival music assaulted John’s ears when he walked through the door, making it hard to think. The multi-coloured flashing lights didn’t help things either.

“Alec… what is this?” John shouted at the guy beside him.

“This is… this… is… ahh… your Gatcha draw of course!” Alec replied, his voice thick with confusion. 

John shook his head… it was… inventive at least. 

Yeah… inventive is a word.

The room was fairly large, with white tile floors and red stone walls. A line of dominoes was lined up beside them, with a little piece of green tape by the first one, labelled ‘Start Here’. From there, the dominoes went zigzagging around the room, then hit some weirdly shaped switches. After that, it was anyone’s guess, as the rest of the room was filled with mazes, balloons, a bathtub full of rubber duckies, and a plethora of other weird things.

It all ended up at the far wall, where stood a pegboard covered in plexiglass. It had five balls on the top and about thirty slots in the bottom, each with a balloon with a ‘?’ on it.

“Why did the intern make a Rube Goldberg machine for the gatcha draw?”

“…”

“Alec?”

“Just, flick the domino, John…” He sighed.

Apparently, this wasn’t what he expected either.

John flicked it, and as designed, the dominoes began to fall. Until it got beside the switch, then it all halted, failing to engage the next step.

 “…”

“…”

“…so… the original way?” John asked.

Alec sighed.

“Congratulations, you have acquired ‘Increased testicle girth’. 1 cm added to the circumference of your testicles.”

“Congratulations, you have acquired ‘Beginners Kitten Training Kit’. You’re one step closer to your fantasy of having a cat girl girlfriend!”

“Congratulations, you have acquired Increased Muscle Density. Your old man strength is slowly becoming actual strength again!” 

“Congratulations, you have acquired the ‘Bejewelled Bottoms’ collection of butt plugs. Bedazzle up your lady friend’s backside, or your own, we won’t judge!”

“Congratulations, you have acquired ‘Whiter Teeth’. Show us those pearly whites! Your teeth are now one shade whiter than before!”

Elvis started calling out the list of things from this gatcha draw, mixed in with the random music and weird sound effects. John wasn’t paying attention, racking his brain on what he needed to do in Infinite Frontiers. 

There was a battle coming up… and… what was her name… she was supposed to come up with a new plan… crap! What was her name!?!

John was interrupted from his thoughts when a tan coloured cat tail, cat-earred headband, and brown leather collar fell on his lap. 

“What the heck is thi- Argh!” He started, then was hit with a rain of a dozen different metal butt plugs. “For the love of god, what are you guys doing?”

“Just getting you back into the same mood you left Infinite Frontiers with John. Pissed off and ready to kill something. I hear there are some pirates for you to hunt.” Alec said. His mood was back to normal when he came back to the stage after a quick commercial break following the failed Rube Goldberg Machine. John was afraid to ask what happened to the intern.

“Well… It’s working.” John said, looking around at the crap that was dropped on him. He held up the tail, which was also a butt plug. “Why… you know what. I think this is enough for today… Do you have somewhere I can store this stuff… I left my bag back in Highschool of the Dead.”

Alec snapped his fingers, and John’s travel bag materialized in front of him, full of all his tomes. “This is the only time I will bring something to you that you left behind. Use it well, John.”

“Will do, thanks.” He replied, stuffing his bag full of the ridiculous sex toys. He really wished these DEN guys would lay off all these sex related things… Speaking of. “Hey, what is the reward for that new quest anyway? It wasn’t listed.” 

 “That will be determined by which world you complete it in. Suffice to say, it will be something valuable to you.” Alec said, taking his seat again. “As for the rest of it, you know we like to watch, so we are giving you a bunch of options. Use them or don’t, it does not matter in the end.”

“Yeah. I have to try really hard to forget that every time I am in another world.” John picked up his sack and adjusted his sword. He walked over to the door, then paused in front of the Infinite Frontier one. “By the way, why are The Great Cleric and Highschool of the Dead locked right now?”

“Nothing too terrible. When you broke the canon, we were just setting some stuff up to help progress a new story. They will be open again soon enough.” Alec replied. “Happy hunting!”

John just nodded, then stepped through the door, following his daughter’s steps into outer space.
