Chapter 131: Hazmat Suit
Jimmy explored the corridor he was in. He was on edge, because he still expected to be shot on sight if he ran into someone, as it still hadn’t dawned to him that this place was likely abandoned. The cleanliness of this place played a trick in his mind, he subconsciously thought that someone was taking good care of this place, which didn’t exactly make him stupid, but paranoid.
Plenty of sci-fi horror movies that he watched as a kid, ran past his mind. He was fully expecting to either be shot, or torn apart by an alien monster that he couldn’t even comprehend. At this point, this was like a natural fear of snakes, he knew enough to be cautious.
However, his fears didn’t outweigh his desire to find cool shit, so he kept browsing, being aware of each step he took. How hard he stepped, and how noisy his movements were.
“This place looks like a damn fancy living room,” He whispered.
This corridor did look a lot like a living room. There were leather couches, with a deep shade of gray, and even a couple of large screens that looked a lot like TVs, but they were turned off, so he didn’t know what exactly they were used for.
Despite the steel-coated, bunker vibes of this place, there still were ferns here and there. The green ferns were decorative, and made this place look less like an eyesore.
Jimmy walked around the couches, and saw a weapon on this long, short-legged glass table that was spread in front of the couches.
The weapon looked a lot like a plasma pistol. He grabbed it, held it, and inspected it. Unlike everything else here, the pistol didn’t look gray, but rather, it was black, with a single red spot at the end of the barrel, that looked a lot like a short scope, or best described as a ’front sight’.
Although its design seems bloated, the pistol was practical, easy to use, and carry. It was lightweight, and roughly seven inches long, or nearly eighteen centimeters. It was small, perfect for quick shots.
Jimmy spotted what looked like the trigger. It was at the top of the pistol’s handle, very much designed to accommodate a human hand, or any creature with opposable thumbs, really.
The trigger was more of a short button. It bore a dark shade of red, and it was heavy on the touch. He really wanted to shoot it, and now that he was equipped with a weapon, he felt less paranoid about getting jumped by any unknown creatures, or in other words, he was confident that he could handle himself.
Jimmy aimed at the ceiling, and then he put some strength in to press the trigger! Despite all the anticipation he had, the plasma pistol did not go off.
“Really!” He exclaimed, as loud as he could in a whisper. “Out of charge? Of course.”
He then inspected the pistol, and asked himself, “How the fuck am I even supposed to recharge this thing? Does it have ammo, plasma disks, a charging cable? Or did I play too many video games? I don’t fucking know.”
Jimmy was frustrated, but he held on to the plasma pistol just in case. He figured that if he ran into anyone, he could at least use the empty gun to threaten someone, so in his eyes, it could come in handy. His hands were occupied now because he was also carrying the torch, but he didn’t really think about that fact.
Jimmy walked past the couches, and eventually, he found these two sets of suits. The suits were held up by this large steel rack. Judging from how long the rack was, there used to be a lot more suits here, but there were only two of them left.
Judging from the eye-sore of a yellow color one of the suits had, paired with a sophisticated looking respirator for a mask, he concluded that one of them was a hazmat suit. It was supposed to offer some protection from radiation.
“I hope I don’t have to wear that anytime soon,” He spoke to himself.
Jimmy had watched plenty of videos to know that hazmat suits provided very limited radiation protection. If he somehow ended up in a radiation dense spot, he wouldn’t be safe from the penetrating gamma waves, or neutron radiation particles even if he wore ten hazmat suits, one on top of the other. It would be a futile attempt, and he’d probably be dead within the day, depending on the density of the radiation.
Anyway, as for the other suit, it seemed more practical. It was mainly made with this black leather material, paired with heavy plates of iron. It didn’t seem advanced whatsoever, but it could protect him from nasty bites of smaller predators if he chose to wear it.
If he was bitten by a two-ton predator the suit wouldn’t be able to help him at all, because he’d get his bones, or even limbs torn off far before the iron plates broke, and he was aware of that, so overall, he was disappointed. In fact, all of the loot he found so far disappointed him, but he still kept his spirits up, hoping to find something useful.
“If I had the tools, I could’ve built this shitty suit myself.” He said, “Very disappointing… but I could make good use of those boots.”
The helmet and the boots looked a bit cool, but the boots were a lot more useful in comparison to anything he found so far. For one thing, the boots looked a lot like steel-toe construction boots, so they were strong enough to handle the typically tough terrain of this era, and so these were the only bit of loot he cared about so far.
“This fucking torch!” He finally noticed it, and dropped it on the ground.
Jimmy then put the boots on, slowly, hoping to not make any noise. The boots weren’t comfortable, but they were covered with this nice, plastic-like fabric inside. Judging from how firm the boots felt, it would take a miracle to puncture them, and he loved that fact, on account to how much he hurt his feet yesterday. He loved the idea of having a pair of boots to depend on, this was why he took them without even thinking about it twice.
Then, he stepped on the torch with them, and said, “Don’t need you anyway.”
Afterwards, he looked at the helmet one more time. It seemed restricting. It was cool, but also heavy, and it almost looked like a medieval helmet because of all the hard iron it was coated with. Only the front part of the helmet was open, which in turn, the helmet failed to protect very sensitive parts of the head, such as the nose, eyes, jaw, and neck. It was hardly a high-grade accessory, so he chose not to wear it.
“This is either a shitty bunker, or they took all the good shit already.” He figured.
