Chapter 14: Golden Retriever
Jimmy felt, and quite frankly acted like a hypocrite. Initially he went through a whole array of drama with Anna, all for the sake of avoiding incest, but in the same day, he discovered that all it took was a grab to the crotch for him to fold like a lawn chair.
It was sad, he felt pathetic. He started to care for Nechi after their ’entanglement’, because at this point it would be inhumane not to care about her, but still, he tried to rationalize what happened today, by linking his urges to his master plan.
’I have to open this damned door,’ He thought. ’I overestimated my dick, sure, but it was a plan in the heat of the moment.’
Jimmy gave it his all to excuse his behaviour, and make peace with his subconscious, but he simply couldn’t. Nechi enjoyed every second of their love making, sure, but he came from a timeline where he was supposed to know better.
All the responsibility fell on him, and he was aware of that. His train of thought became so entangled, that at some point he got angry at himself for trying to excuse his behaviour. His mind was a mess, but at the end, he proved that he couldn’t change his ways.
Knowing that Nechi cared for him, and knowing that he had carved a soft spot in her heart for himself, he went ahead and pestered her for more information. He insisted that he had hit his head in the last hunt, and couldn’t remember much, so of course, Nechi was very patient with him, and very willing to help him remember.
“What do you want to know, sweet cousin?” She asked, as she laid her head on his lap.
Quite directly, he asked, “This door… I mean, this hard, gray rock behind us. Do you know what it’s for?”
“We don’t know,” She answered honestly. “It has been here for many moons. Our grandpa even remembers finding it here, many many moons ago, far before he died. This gray rock also provided us with the Hunting Trail. We’ve been using that trail to avoid the big animals for years.”
“Big animals, you mean dinosaurs?” He queried.
“They have many names,” She sighed. “Dinosaurs, lizards, land fish, birds… too many names to count.”
It was surprising that they called them dinosaurs, even in this age. Either their speech integrated well with English, or their brains were relying on collective intelligence to make sense of names. A dinosaur was a dinosaur, after all, even if they spoke in Pig Latin, Mandarin, or Swedish.
Anyway, he had a couple more questions for her, and these ones were perhaps more important. “What was I like before I hit my head? I mean, romance aside, what were my powers, my capabilities?”
“You mean… your magic?” She asked.
“Yes. My magic, and I want to know about what kind of magic everyone else has.” He said, and in order not to sound suspicious, he added. “I can’t remember anything about magic. Like, I don’t know how I melted the door with my cum, for example.”
“Oh?” She turned around on his lap, facing him, and said. “Your cum didn’t melt anything before. I’d be dead if it did.”
’Well, fuck’ He cussed, inwardly. ’That’s helpful, very fucking helpful. Am I supposed to figure out all this magical shit by myself!”
Jimmy wasn’t mad at Nechi, not even a little bit. In fact, her sweet, oval face made it impossible for him to be mad at her. The golden blonde hair on her made him fold before he could even develop an angry thought.
In a sense, she was like a deadly, sensual, golden retriever of a woman. He was absolutely hypnotized, and had an array of mixed feelings about her.
Anyway, since he couldn’t figure out much about his own magical abilities, he focused on what magic his people possessed, other than Anna, of course. He hadn’t seen anyone else use magic yet, but still, he wanted to be aware of what people he was surrounded by. He didn’t want to get torched, or ripped apart if he looked at someone wrong. They didn’t have many laws here, they were cavemen.
“Each and every one of us can use magic, cousin Jimmy. Half of us have Dinosaur Strength, which can be very helpful, but some of our people got luck on their side, and some are even too lucky. We have twelve people who can run really fast, too fast, even, to the point where they can disappear from your sight in just ten counts. They’re faster than any dinosaur we ever saw, even faster than the birds! We call them Field Runners, because they love to run in fields.” She explained.
Staring at his chin, she continued, “Those with Dinosaur Strength, and the Field Runners are the ideal hunters. They keep us fed.”
“Okay,” He stroked her hair. “That’s very helpful, Nechi. What about the rest?”
Nechi did not answer immediately. She was hesitant, for reasons that Jimmy could not understand.
However, she did answer eventually, and said, “We don’t talk about the rest. They prefer something called privacy, that’s what they call it. Privacy.”
Confused, he pointed out. “That doesn’t make much sense.”
Nechi was a woman he could trust. She was in her twenties, and had seen a lot in her life, so he was confident enough to trust her, but what she said just now didn’t make any sense. Why would cavemen want privacy regarding something they could beat their chest in pride over?
“It will make sense to you soon,” She said, and reached out to stroke his cheek. “You and I, we’re part of the people who need this ’privacy’. Our magic is unique.”
What she said was a bit of a shock, but it made sense. Jimmy didn’t have magical abilities that could be considered normal. Not even a little bit.
Nechi provided him with further comfort, as she explained, “I don’t understand much of what the old heads say. Unlike others with unique magic who practice their magic in private, the old heads spend most of their time sitting in dark caves. Maybe they’re too powerful for us to understand them?”
Letting out a stress-coated sigh, she continued, “But you and I, cousin, we are young, so we have much more freedom. This is why they let you become a hunter, it’s because you’re too young to understand what your magic is about. I mean, you spent most of your time playing with rodents, so they figured you may need many more moons to master your magic, so you can even practice your powers in public.”
“I see… That sounds nice, but they think us young ones are useless, don’t they? Especially me.” He pointed out. “That’s what I’m picking up on.”
“Perhaps…” She avoided eye contact, and her mood shifted. “But it’s still a good thing for us. We can do whatever we want, even though we both have unique magic.”
Jimmy needed a moment to process everything Nechi said. Apparently, even cavemen were capable of developing layers of Inner Circles, which he found interesting, though also infuriating. His access to further information was essentially limited, as those with unique magic were too secretive about their abilities.
At some point, he asked, “What kind of magic do you have, Nechi?”
“We’re not supposed to talk about it. We agreed to not speak of it, cousin Jimmy.” She said, and then pulled herself away from his lap.
“Please, cousin Nechi, I can’t remember anything.” He insisted, desperate for more information.
“Huhh…” She sighed in frustration. “If I tell you, will you stop talking about it?”
Jimmy nodded. He would agree with anything at this point, as he just wanted a good idea of what type of ’unique magic’ surrounded him.
At last, she revealed, “I play with the dead. I can bring them back to life, is what I mean. Usually, the people or animals I bring back only live for a few hours, but they’re not themselves anymore. They don’t speak, they don’t eat or drink either–they just stare at me, and follow me until they die for the second time. It’s very scary.”
