Chapter 133: Jurassic Era control panel
Jimmy was absolutely horrified by the creatures he saw around him. Creatures that were trapped in containment units.
Some of them were dinosaurs, some of them looked otherworldly, like mutated gorillas, and overall there was a wide assortment of species in the units, but he was mainly focused on the only human he saw. A blonde, tall, and muscular female.
He couldn’t think of any situation other than this where such a sturdy woman would look helpless, she looked like she hoarded all of the good genes in the world. She looked strong.
The liquid within the container was pale, so he could see exactly what she looked like, every inch of her muscular build, and most importantly, he could see that she was breathing. He could even hear her heartbeat! She was alive in there, trapped in a horrible existence by god knows who.
“Number 42…” He mumbled, “Maybe I can free her? I should free her. It doesn’t matter if she was made in a lab, or trapped in a lab, she’s breathing.”
Jimmy didn’t feel the same way about the other monsters around him. Unlike them, he believed that he could communicate with a human being, or bargain with them if they chose to go rogue, and be violent.
However, just to be sure that he wasn’t releasing an experimental monster, he tapped into her heartbeat, and then her brain. He checked a few memories of hers, only to find out that she was a member of his own tribe! He saw memories of her walking around in the cavern, fighting with dinosaurs, and even masturbating. He was flash banged with those last few memories, he hadn’t exactly been looking for them, but nevertheless he confirmed that she was not violent, not unless she was prompted, judging from her large build.
“Okay… how do I do this?” He mumbled.
Jimmy wanted to kick the container. The glass was just an inch thick, but he was sure that if he kicked it hard enough with his steel-toe wonder boots, he could break her free. He was getting amped after he stopped checking her memories, excited even, so he was prone to making some dumb choices.
He was about to kick the glass, but then another string of paranoia swung in front of him, he said, “What if she gets cut because of the broken glass? What if the switch from breathing liquids to breathing air kills her? It could be shocking to her, I don’t fucking know.”
He did not want to hurt the only contained human here. He had to be careful, because even though he could heal deep cuts, he wasn’t sure he could handle more advanced medical issues that may arise once he kicked the glass. He could be killing her while he was trying to save her.
Jimmy gathered his nerves, and started looking around. The room was big, and there also was a single, large control panel in here, that he had overlooked earlier on. He had been stunned, and focused on the containers before, so of course he overlooked the panel.
“What fuckass panel is this? No screen?” He scratched his head, stressed out. “How the hell do you build a futuristic bunker and then use the same technology they used to send people on the fucking moon?! For the containment units, worst of all! So many things can go wrong.”
“God…” He sighed, and tried to stay calm.
There were a lot of things about this bunker that pissed him off beyond measure, but then again, it was a step up from using stone spears, so he tried to be calm. He inspected the control panel, and tried to figure out what its tiny, red buttons did.
The buttons looked like they were arranged very randomly. There were sixty of them, and they were not color coded, not labeled, nothing like that!
Pressing one of the buttons, even at random, would be the worst game of Russian Roulette in recorded history. He could unleash a vicious alien, he could free them all by accident, which was a bigger problem, or he could kill them all, including the human he was trying to save.
It was irresponsible to just pick one button and hope for the best, so as he looked at the large metal box of a control panel, he leaned over closer, and noticed something. He started seeing faded outlines of numbers, and letters.
They were barely noticeable, as from the looks of it, the labels had disintegrated through time, but once he spotted them, he started to understand how this panel worked. In ten minutes, he even located which button was linked to Unit Nr. 42 which was where the human was trapped in, but he didn’t press it.
With fifty containers, and sixty buttons to work with, he got paranoid enough to know that ten of those buttons were meant for other functions. He spent thirty minutes trying to decipher what the buttons without numbers labeled into them were about, but this was problematic, because even though he could make out some letters, he didn’t understand the language, so he didn’t know what the words meant.
“One in a tenth chance I’ll free her?” He mumbled, “Nah, that’s a damn 90% chance mortality rate. Can’t risk it.”
Jimmy immediately thought of an idea. He had been looking at numbers for nearly an hour now, so he got this solid plan to test the mystery buttons on another creature, so he’d know which buttons did what.
He picked the least dangerous-looking creature he could find down here. Which was a Compy. They were small, scavenging dinosaurs, so even if they broke free, he could handle it.
Jimmy pressed the first button on the line, labeled AAEM, or it looked like that, at least. Thankfully, the buttons with letters were lined up starting from the top left corner of the control panel, so he couldn’t mistake them with numbers.
Anyway, after he pressed that button, he then pressed number twenty-one, which was the Compy’s containment unit. He rushed towards the unit, fully expecting the worst, and so he tried to focus, just in case he had to tame the Compy.
Jimmy got there, and was surprised to see that the Compy had grown twice in size!
It was no monster, and the Compy still shouldn’t weigh more than a few kilos, but this was impressive. He didn’t nearly understand how the liquids did such a thing, it was impossible to take a solid guess, but he didn’t care. He wanted to see what the rest of the buttons did.
