Chapter 71: Dinosaur Tamers?
Jimmy figured out why these striped dinosaurs didn’t attack. They mistook him and his friends as humans that they used to know, and found comfort in seeing them.
They liked humans, and judging from the curiosity they had towards his torch, odds were the other humans these dinosaurs had met, also carried torches. The pieces of the puzzle were coming together.
The new line of questions he had now, or in other words, the new puzzle, circled around the image of this human he saw in the dinosaur’s head. The main question was, since these dinosaurs were used to humans, where were these humans that the dinosaurs held dearly in their hearts?
This was an important question, and yet it was impossible to figure it out right now. If another human had tamed these dinosaurs, what could possibly cause them to be separated? Were they killed?
If they weren’t separated, or if those humans weren’t killed, then a heavier question followed suit. Were there tribes close by, tribes of other humans, other species of humans, and if there were, how hostile were they towards other tribes?
The tribesfolk had not mentioned any wars, or battles with other tribes, so he did not know what to think. He did not know what to expect.
Jimmy browsed the memories of these dinosaurs, hoping to find more information about these odd species of humans, but he got nothing. These dinosaurs were too smart, likewise, they had thousands of memories, and he could not browse through them all without either wasting days, or wasting his mana in mere seconds.
“Of course,” He sighed, irritated. “Stun me with a mystery, but don’t give me any more answers, sure, that’s very helpful.”
The dinosaurs could see that he was distressed, but they did not know why. They were intelligent, their intelligence likely circled around their magical abilities, but communication was always a challenge in this era.
The type of information he wanted out of these dinosaurs surpassed simple commands, and nose pettings, he wanted them to write essays of important info. But of course, that would be impossible, because these dinosaurs can’t hold pens, for one thing, and also, he didn’t have a pen to write with, nor paper, and they didn’t speak the same language either, so he didn’t know why he expected an essay from them.
“This is confusing,” He held his head. “I studied your brains so much I forgot you weren’t humans. Of course you can’t write me a fucking essay!”
“Sweetie, are you talking to the dinosaurs?” Nechi asked, from the safety of Gutaxun’s back. “What’s going on down there? Do the dinosaurs speak our tongue?”
“No,” He answered, and snapped back to reality. “You two can get down here if you want. They don’t want to eat us, they just mistook us as their human masters.”
“Humans? You mean people?” She asked, and confusion struck her equally as hard. “I’ve never heard of anything like that. As far as I know, you’re the first ’human’ to tame dinosaurs, ever.”
“Yes,” Eni added, “If we knew dinosaurs could be our friends, our elders would’ve tamed hundreds of them by now.”
Neither of them got any closer to a solid answer. They were stumped, and at some point, they stopped asking questions, and were just happy to be alive.
Being approached by fatty carnivores in the night was almost always deadly, and yet, they lucked out, and met possibly the only four smart dinosaurs in a fifty-mile radius. Other than Gutaxun, of course, but they were even smarter than him, which was surprising.
’Fuck this,’ He thought. ’If they knew more advanced humans, the type that would build the fucking bunker back home, I’d study every single memory they have to figure out where those humans were. But that horse-faced motherfucker couldn’t have invented thick steel doors, not even if he had another one-hundred thousand years to figure it out.’
Jimmy gave up on this puzzle for now, and started showing affection towards the dinosaurs. He pet their snouts, and heard them chirp louder in response. He didn’t recognize what species they were, obviously, but he was sure that Anna would recognize them once she saw them.
Regarding that matter, he wanted to see if he could tame these dinosaurs without permanently altering their brain structure. They were certainly smart enough to cooperate, if they wanted to.
“Eni, do you want one of them?” He asked, and prompted her to climb down.
“Yes, they can be useful.” She answered. “If I remember right, they like to eat fish, so they can feed us for a while. Tame one of them for me.”
“Nah,” He answered, and then insisted, “Come down here, pick one, and tame it yourself. We don’t need magic to make them like us.”
“No thank you,” She said, “I don’t want to lose my arms, or my head.”
“Come down here,” He insisted. “I feel like I’m talking to myself. It’s driving me nuts.”
Both of the ladies were eventually convinced to climb down, and of course, they were surprised by how gentle these untamed dinosaurs were. Every bit of life experience they had, taught them otherwise. Predators weren’t supposed to be gentle, especially if magic wasn’t involved, as they’ve recently learned.
“Amazing,” Nechi stretched a smile across her face. “So they’re just kind, and sweet?”
“Looks like it,” He said. “They’re smarter than most of us, so they’re smart enough to be kind, especially towards humans. My theory is that because of their experience, they believe that humans are as smart as them, and so they choose not to hunt us, or kill us. I think they were cranky because we woke them up, but our torches helped them see that we were humans, so they mellowed out.”
Jimmy had figured out this part of the puzzle, it was the easiest one, but as for everything else, he was clueless. He didn’t have enough information to work with.
For now, he wanted to see if these dinosaurs could be tamed without the use of magic. If not, he planned to alter their brain, just slightly, to nudge them towards a servant-master cooperation. He didn’t want to ruin their beautiful brains.
During his browsing earlier, he could feel that he needed to be four-to-five times more precise than usual if he worked on their brains, simply because they were a lot smarter than the average dinosaur. Even if he exhausted his powers, he could damage their IQs beyond repair, so any bit of change that he had to make, would be best practiced as minimal.
“If they can fish for us like you said, then our tribe might not starve, even if we don’t find any other survivors.” He said, pushing Eni’s idea. “Try to tame them yourselves, and let’s see how it goes.”
