Chapter 56: “What about the rest?”
After walking out of the High Grasslands, it was only a matter of time for them to find some food. Gutaxun eventually found a relatively small dinosaur to hunt, and he caught up with it quickly, and crushed its skull.
Gutaxun killed a herbivore called Emausaurus Ernsti. It was a species best known for its weak, armor-like features.
Its armor was effective against smaller predators, but it was not enough to keep Apex Predators away. Gutaxun killed it in seconds. He was getting hungry, especially since he had eight people on his back now, an estimated twelve-hundred pounds worth of people, or almost five-hundred and fifty kilograms, and so he was slowly getting tired out.
Nevertheless, he did not eat before the humans on his back did. He could hear their bellies grumbling, and had enough compassion to let them eat first. He could estimate that eight people were not nearly enough to eat even a third of his hunt.
Anyway, despite its short body length of just three meters, or roughly ten feet, the Emausaurus Ernsti had a surprising amount of meat on it. Its belly was fat, so it had eaten well throughout these past few months, and weighed roughly two-hundred kilos, or four-hundred and forty pounds.
It was a meaty creature, so they had no trouble slicing a few pounds of steak from it. The hunters had plenty of appropriate stone knives to do so. Zik cut some beautiful steaks for them, as the rest of the group started a large campfire.
Dusk was only two hours away, their home was a bit more than three hours away if Gutaxun wasn’t rushed, but they didn’t care. The survivors of yesterday’s catastrophe had to eat, and they had to eat now, or else starvation might severely affect their health during their recovery.
The fire was not hot enough to cook the steaks through in a short time, so they had to settle with steak that was a bit rare. Nevertheless, this was a five-star meal in this era, as the meat was tender enough, since it came right out of a freshly killed herbivore.
Gutaxun was also eating well. After Zik cut the steaks, he waved his hand, gesturing at Gutaxun to eat. There still was plenty of meat left over, so he likely won’t even be able to finish it all, but no one cared about preserving meat right now.
Anyway, as they ate their steaks, the group broke open many conversations. There was certainly a lot to talk about.
Anna was once more focused on the world around her. She did not understand how they were eating the meat of an armoured herbivore who was supposed to be extinct.
“This butt-sniffer is supposed to be an early ancestor of the Stegosaurus we killed in the morning.” She held her head. “I wonder what kind of magic this species used to survive for millions of years. Something clever, I suppose?”
“Well,” Jimmy sighed, and then leaned over, and whispered in her ear, “I hate to admit it, but I don’t think we’re on Earth. Magic shouldn’t exist, for once, not to mention half of the damn dinos we see. Does that sound like Earth to you?”
“Half of the dinos we see don’t either belong to the same era, or the same continent.” She followed along. “So, you’re right, we’re not on Earth, not at all, it’s obvious. Holy mashup! Am I right?”
The two of them cackled afterwards. They could only laugh at their situation, because for some reason, the forgotten god that Jimmy ejaculated on, put them in this world where almost everything made no sense.
They’ve transmigrated into what they understood as the worst place possible. There was nothing else for them to do but laugh, and other than that, they found comfort in the fact that they at least had each other in this messed up world.
Anyway, that topic aside, the hunters did eventually open up about what happened yesterday. They were feeling comfortable, at last, so they found it easier to talk of the horrors of yesterday.
“Absolute havoc,” Zik said. “We were practically ambushed. The giants came out of nowhere, and started stomping our hunters to death. I don’t know where you kids went, I heard something about you abandoning the hunt, but it was for the best, you kids got lucky. We lost so many good people to those giants.”
“Yes…” Nechi nodded, as she listened attentively. “I don’t know if Eni told you, but we avenged our hunters. We killed those giants, all five of them.”
“You killed five!?” Cika exclaimed. “Eni did not tell us anything about that! I was worried that we weren’t gonna make it home, even on top of your pet dinosaur, but now we might make it. But… how did you kill them? I saw the strongest elders fall.”
Before Nechi was about to answer, Zik interrupted her, and emphasized, “Five? What about the rest of them?”
At that second, the team almost choked on their food. They put in so much effort to kill those giants, and it appeared that they haven’t even killed all of them? They were shocked!
“There are more?” Jimmy frantically asked. “How many?”
“I counted at least thirty.” Zik answered. “We made our last stand in that big ditch. The elders saw it as a strategic advantage, somehow, but most of us got slaughtered there. Maybe they got confident after killing three giants? I don’t know, but, other than the Field Runners who abandoned us, and us who managed to flee while the giants were busy, I’d be surprised if there were any other survivors.”
“I saw an elder helping a few younglings escape.” Rulya, the youngest survivor, spoke out. “They were about the same age as us, but I don’t know if they made it. We haven’t seen them.”
There was a lot to unravel here. Other than the fact that there may be more survivors out here in the wild, Zik revealed that there were at least twenty-one more giants roaming the lands!
The latter fact was absolutely terrifying! They could run into these giants at any time, for one thing, which made getting home a difficult task.
Other than that, if they chose to look for more survivors now, less than two hours before dusk, they also had to consider that they could get kicked, or slapped out of existence by giants that likely had no trouble roaming in the dark!
This horrible day simply refused to end. Trouble was brewing, and it was difficult to predict when it would unfold.
Eni tried to excuse her negligence, and so she added, “I haven’t seen any other giants, but then again, I miss most things when I run fast… Maybe we’re safe?”
“Maybe won’t cut it,” Jimmy said out loud. “We’re not safe, but other than that, we can’t in good conscience go home. If those young hunters somehow survived, we gotta look for them, or at least, we gotta make sure that they somehow passed us, and made it home.”
Staring at Eni, he then demanded, “Eat your food, and start running. Go see if anyone made it home, and then get back to us.”
“Is that really the best use of our time?” Zik asked, concerned. “What are we supposed to do while she heads home? Wait?”
“No,” He shook his head. “We’re sitting ducks if we wait here. It’s too risky. We have a couple of hours of daylight left, and I might just be able to put it to use, put all seven of us into use while Eni heads home.”
As everyone watched him, utterly confused, Jimmy wasted no time to put his rushed plan into motion. This time, he had to depend on Anna, and her knowledge.
“Baby,” He tugged her arm. “What’s the fastest dinosaur you can think of? It doesn’t have to be a big species, it just has to be a fast one that can carry at least one human on its back. I’m going to try and tame a dinosaur for each and every one of us, and maybe, just maybe, we can either make it home in one piece, or find more survivors.”
Anna was given the opportunity to shine. However, she could not think of a single, easily tamable dinosaur right off the bat, so she had to think about the matter for a moment. She wanted to pick the best species for the job, one that didn’t require too much effort to find, and tame.
