Chapter 250: The first flying Archer
Zelna flew towards the top of the rocky mountain at full speed, which in this case was 35 km/h at most, or 21.7 mp/h.
She wasn’t going to beat the speed of a Quetzalcoatlus Northropi (QT) anytime soon, or ever, but considering the fact that she could fly nearly as fast as she could run, her speed was nothing short of beneficial, if not impressive. She made it to the enemy in less than an hour, and even crossed the QT riders along the way.
The QT riders were spooked when they saw a flying human, but Zelna had done the smart thing and kept her distance from them. The QTs weren’t hostile towards humans, not unless provoked or ’sicked’ but if she collided with them her skeleton would turn into mush.
She kept her distance, and simply scared the riders shitless for a moment. They couldn’t make out who flew past them, but considering what Jimmy achieved tonight, they simply assumed that he got one of the humans to fly. They didn’t see Zelna as an enemy, thankfully, and let her be.
Anyway, once Zelna spotted the tens of hand-held torches across the mountainside, shining one after the other in a straightish line, she was certain that she was seeing the enemy. It was more difficult than she anticipated to orient herself across the mountain in the dead of night, but once she saw the torches, she was sure that she spotted the enemy.
“Found you, cock suckers…” She grinned.
Afterwards, she drew her bow, and flung an arrow towards the crowd, from a safe distance of thirty meters, or around a hundred feet.
Typically, she wouldn’t want to be this close to the enemy, especially since people with Dinosaur Strength could shoot her down, but unless one of them could see in the dark, she was safe. The odds of her being spotted were next to none.
Once she heard a woman amongst the crowd squeal, she was certain that she hit one of them. With fourteen more arrows in her scaly quiver, she drew out another, and shot at the crowd again.
An uproar stretched out across the wave of enemies. It took two wounded comrades to achieve that result, and she knew that they were just wounded, because if she managed to hit them in the head, they wouldn’t be able to make a sound, nevertheless scream in agony, inciting the uproar.
“Looks like you cunts suffered one too many blows in the head,” She smiled, “Hehe.”
Afterwards, she changed her position, and landed at a random spot on the mountain. In the off-chance that the enemy did throw their spears towards her, she’d rather not be there to intercept them. A bloody wound could quite likely be the death of her out here, especially since Jimmy, the only healer she knew was almost an hour away, so she used the harsh, rocky terrain of the mountainside as her shield, or as another layer of camouflage.
“Why won’t these piss drinkers give up?” She whispered, as she pulled back her third arrow. “What could they possibly be winning? The grasslands are nice, but didn’t they lose hundreds of their people already?”
Zelna had survived in the forest, close to the grasslands long enough to know a thing or two about bravery, and perseverance against the odds, so she felt bad about striking the third person within the crowd. Stone-tip arrows hurt like a motherfucker, for one thing, and they left a nasty, deep wound behind. She was very aware of that, but she tried to remind herself that the motive of the enemy, although senselessly stubborn, was also vile.
The enemy was here to plunder, kill, invade, and perhaps even rape whatever stood in their path. The intent behind their stride was a tale as old as time, but in this case, when one of the first major battles amongst humans was being observed, if not written, the tale, in her perspective, was too fresh to be considered as old as time. It was a tale as old as an infant, so naturally she could barely understand what train of thought would prompt the enemy to be so insistent.
Their determination was a death march, one where only they would suffer casualties for no good reason.
“Should have pissed off…” She sighed.
Zelna emptied her quiver on the enemy. She drew her bow fifteen times, and hit fifteen enemies.
Unless she hit them in the head, the arrows may not have had enough of a velocity to kill any of them on the spot, but she knew for a fact that they’d suffer if her fifteen victims didn’t stop and tend to their wounds.
“I guess we got to kill them all,” She said, and then flew away.
Zelna felt a bit bad about sending fifteen men and women towards the path of death, but then again, their stubbornness could paint a picture. Despite their casualties, they could not gain the infinite wisdom to flee, and since she kept reminding herself of that fact, she lost any bit of remorse she felt for the enemy.
Other than that, when she became airborne once more, she nearly forgot about the enemy completely!
Other than the fact that she ate a few bugs on her way here, having the ability to fly was nothing short of liberating!
As an archer, she greatly valued the chance to have a better angle at her targets, an improvement of any sort that would lead to a better shot.
Every drawn bow mattered, even for someone like her, who had the advantage of time whenever she drew her bow. Being able to fly gave her angles that she had never seen possible before, even within the dead of night, and with that said, her life finally felt complete!
Even if she lost the ability to fly and crashed into the mountainside, she’d still be happy. The sense of freedom, and power she felt from her first, long flight, was enough to fulfill her for ten lifetimes! A lot like earlier, she didn’t care if she lived or died.
“I feel fine… I feel great!” She held her breath, “Flying isn’t as dangerous as they said.”
