Chapter 91: The Invisible
After everyone enjoyed the feast, the tribesfolk were given the freedom to go along with the rest of their day. The survivors, otherwise known as the hunters, could finally take some much deserved naps, and after shoving pounds of meat down their throat, the naps hit just right! They could relax, they were home.
Unlike everyone else, however, Jimmy was quite energetic, because he was rocked by last night’s events. He was attacked by a ghost, for reasons he could still not understand, and he wanted some answers.
From everything that happened over the past few days, this was the only mystery that he could not yet figure out. He didn’t want to be attacked again, for one thing, because he hated the idea of being conscious, and unconscious at the same time.
He could not predict what he’d do if he was pushed to a state where he’d be walking and talking, while actually unconscious, and with no recollection of events after he actually woke up, and became conscious. Basically, he didn’t want to hurt, or even kill people by accident.
To get answers, he caught some of the elders, old men and women, before they could get to their secluded caves. These were the tribe’s most powerful people, with magic so strong, so unique, that they refused to use it unless they absolutely had to! If someone could give him answers, it was them, or at least, he believed he’d get answers from them. It’s what he hoped.
“Elders, I have an experience to share, questions to ask.” He tried to be respectful. “Please give me a moment of your time.”
“You’ve earned more than a moment,” An old man answered, he went by the name of Maul, because he mauled a dinosaur once, bit it to death. “Follow us.”
The elders insisted on going back to their caves, and he had to follow suit. As he followed them, he discovered that the most powerful elders of the tribe shared one single cave. It was massive, about the size of a mini cavern, and hidden deep within the puzzle like tunnels that were attached to the main cavern.
It took some walking to get there, and when they did, he got the feeling that these elders, this inner circle of the tribe, was almost like a sect. There was nothing in their secluded cave that seemed dangerous per se, but they’ve discovered candles, from the looks of it.
They’ve put stretched threads of vines in animal fat, and used them to light the cave. These candles alone gave the cave an uneasy vibe.
“Oh, so you guys don’t meditate in the dark all day? You actually have candles.” Jimmy said, as he tried to lessen the otherwise quiet, and secretive mood.
No one answered his remarks, as if they didn’t pay attention whatsoever, but they heard him. Despite his achievements, despite the respect that even they believed he earned, they still saw him as a child, and children were prone to say stupid things.
Everyone sat down. Jimmy did so too.
There were twelve elders in this cave right now, each one more powerful than the last. They were considered the tribe’s finest, and yet, they believed that Jimmy was stronger than them, or he was going to be stronger in a short time, on account to how quickly his magical ability, and understanding of magic accelerated.
The twelve elders stared at him, quietly, and refused to say a word. Jimmy sat there, confused, but then he remembered that he was the one with questions to ask.
“Right,” He shook his head. “Do you guys know what ghosts are? Phantoms… erg, how else can I put this? Souls?”
Each and every name he said was poorly used in a sentence, but he didn’t care. He just wanted to help them get a sense of the paranormal experience he had.
“You mean, The Invisible?” An old woman asked, her voice crackling because of her old age. “The weavers of fate…”
She went by the name of Gorka, and she seemed as old as time. She was the oldest one here, so if anyone knew about the paranormal, odds were, she did, she must have some experiences to share.
“Well, this guy who attacked me did look invisible, and visible.” He followed along. “When we were face to face, he sounded loud, and quiet at the same time.”
“Yes…” Gorka stretched her words, as she started coughing. “He is one of them, one of The Invisible. A fate weaver as good as any.”
Afterwards, she asked, “Did he cite his wish? What were his demands?”
“Demands?” He repeated. “I don’t know anything about that. We started yelling at each other until my voice started sounding weird, foreign, and then he knocked me out. He did yell at me to wake up, but that made no sense, cause I was already awake.”
Jimmy didn’t want to mention that he screamed so loudly at the entity that he temporarily adapted a Scottish accent. That would be impossible to describe thoroughly, especially since he couldn’t naturally do any accents. The entity had forced him into such a shift last night, but he could not replicate it even if he tried.
That didn’t matter right now, however, because as soon as he described his experience, the elders went silent. They sat there silently, for too long, even, and they looked at each other in worry, so he started preparing for bad news. He didn’t know what to expect exactly, but it couldn’t be good.
Finally, after two minutes of silence, Gorka spoke, “The Invisible don’t visit you unless they’re there to deliver a decree, and yet you have no decree to follow, no rule to adhere to. I’m afraid that your destiny appears to be unwritten, or, it can’t be written by The Invisible.”
“Huh?” He grunted. “What does that mean? I won’t get attacked in my sleep or something, right?”
“The truth is, we don’t know.” She followed along. “This is the first time The Invisible approached someone without a goal in mind. It’s strange, it’s not natural, so we cannot help you. We don’t know how.”
“Of course,” He sighed.
As a last attempt, he asked, “Should I expect this Invisible man again, elders? Should I prepare for the worst?”
“The Invisible never mean harm, so I suggest you relax first, young one.” She said, “But you should expect them, they will visit you tonight, and perhaps, they’ll share their decree, if they can even assign your fate, that is.”
The elders barely helped him today. He didn’t know if he saw a ghost, a god, or whatever the hell else, and yet, he was supposed to expect them again? Meaning that there were more than one of them?!
Jimmy was close to shitting himself, that was for sure, but he tried to calm down. He was walked out of the secluded cave, dreading the night that was to follow a few hours later. He wasn’t visited last night, but he had a gut feeling that he was going to get visited tonight. He couldn’t shake this feeling.
The elders said that The Invisible were harmless, meaning that each and every one of those twelve elders met The Invisible entities at some point, but he was skeptical about this ’good will’ they were supposed to have. Last time he met one, he had weird, surreal dreams, and was blacked out for at least four hours. He was not looking forward to the next meet and greet, not at all.
