Chapter 114: I Needed To Be Safe For My Children
“Celine! Celine!!” Tristan cupped her cheeks, frantically shaking her but she was limp in his arms.
Warm liquid dripped onto his palm from the back of her head and he didn’t need to see it’s red pigment to realize it was blood.
She moved for a moment, a small moan of pain sounding behind her throat, her lips parted shakily and her brows strung tightly together with her eyes still shut.
He let out a relief filled breath hearing something from her, the way she had been unmoving just a few seconds ago brought a strangely cold terror shuddering through his bones.
“I…need to go home…” She muttered, almost inaudibly but he was holding her so close, enough for her breath to flutter right around his neck, “I need…to go back to them.”
Tristan never stayed to figure out the meaning behind her words, she was losing blood and needed urgent care so he lowered himself, sweeping her form into his arms and carrying her securely against him.
Kaleb and a few of the security guards he’d brought from the company were gathered around the limp bodies of her attackers.
Three huge men who had already been taken down even before he arrived.
Tristan’s arm tightened around her body as a sharp fire suddenly raged within his chest.
He had gotten here too late. Self hatred surged through him, but when he glanced down at her small and tender form in his arms he wondered how she had been able to subdue these men, all on her own.
“Kaleb, take care of these people. They can’t get away with this, if something happens to her, I swear…” The threat remained hanging as the woman’s fingers dug into his arm, he glanced down at her quickly, noticing her face scrunched up in pain, the rage remained but something else took over, a deep worry he couldn’t suppress.
Hurriedly, he carried her to his car and strapped her securely in the seat.
Every part of him was tense throughout the whole drive, she would occasionally shake her head from side to side, moaning in pain and he would squeeze the steering wheel with so much force. The sound of her pain ate at him and he felt restless with the urge to take it all away, the hurt…the pain she was currently going through.
“Shh. I’ll get you to the hospital, you’re going to be fine, it won’t hurt anymore…”
Her head was too heavy to carry, but all she could think about were her children. Amidst the burning pain, someone…a rough hand laid gently on her head, smoothing her hair comfortingly. Those words, and that voice…she knew who it was, but right now she couldn’t remember, all she knew was that her heart felt at ease because of that voice, like he was someone she knew she could be safe with.
That hand…she grabbed hold of it, really tight, intertwining her fingers into it. It was warm, large and somewhat rough but it was soothing, it became her anchor, and it kept her tethered to the faintest trace of light she could grab onto.
That voice continued to utter soothing words, and the burn on her head slowly began to fade away along with the pain, the darkness took her again but this time when it did, she wasn’t scared… because he was here.

“Sss!” Celine sucked in a sharp painful breath, she slowly opened her eyes and was met with plain white ceilings, the strong smell of disinfectant sharp in her senses.
“You said there was nothing wrong with her, why isn’t she awake yet?” She suddenly heard a familiar, angry voice yelling outside the room.
“Please calm down, we have treated her injuries, she is just asleep now, she will wake up soon.” A voice assured, sounding somewhat nervous as if that angry person was a monster with horns and he would devour the room whole if he didn’t get what he wanted.
“Boss, I think we should wait a bit longer, if the doctor says she’s going to be fine then she will be fine.”
“She was in pain goddamn it! Don’t tell me to…”
His words trailed off as her throat itched, feeling extremely dry making her cough. The sound must have reached them outside the room because instantly the door was shoved open.
She went still when her eyes met his, hazel, like melted gold and grass and it all came back to her at once.
She had been on her way home but then she was attacked, she fought them off best she could but one of them hit her in the head and she had felt blood!
Panicked, Celine quickly reached for the back of her head but instead of warm stickiness, she felt gauze secured around her head.
“Don’t touch it!” He quickly said, making her look up at him again. She seemed to have heard panic in his voice, just like she had heard a raw terror from the way he had called her name when she had almost fainted on the roads.
“Are you alright, do you feel alright?” He was next to her bed before she could even blink, his eyes glazed with undisguised concern.
For some reason, seeing him this uneasy made her heart skip a beat, something warm filling up her chest. She quickly broke away from his gaze, looking in another direction but he trapped her chin, and her face was lifted to him again.
“Answer me, does it still hurt?” He queried, insistent this time as if his next breath depended entirely on her answer.
“I feel fine.” She said in a low, exhausted sounding voice. Celine tried to pick herself up to sit but she felt a rush of dizziness when she lifted herself.
“Stay still, you’re not healed yet.” He pressed her shoulders down lightly and pushed her slowly to lay down again.
Celine couldn’t keep herself calm, she had no idea how long she had been here for, Leo and Leah would be so scared and worried if they didn’t see her on time.
“I feel better now, I have to get home now.” She said stubbornly trying to push past the faint headache and dizziness to get up again but firm arms gripped her shoulders.
“Celine, I swear if you try to move one more time I’ll tie you down to the bed.” He warned sternly. Her body went stiff.
She pursed her lips and no words of protest could come out again even though she really wanted to protest. The serious look in his eyes told her that if she really didn’t do as he said, he would carry out his threat. Quietly, she laid down again.
It was no use arguing with him, he would probably leave soon now that she was awake and she would go home immediately.
He looked pleased when she silently laid down on the bed, “Rest now, I’ll go have a word with your doctor.”
He was already leaving when she thought about something and immediately stopped him by saying, “You saved me…back there on the road?” She asked.
His words came with a light hint of humor and something she almost mistook as pride, “It wasn’t exactly saving when you left those men half dead already. How did you do that?”
He looked at her over his shoulder, curiosity and fascination in his eyes.
“I needed to be safe, so I just…fought back.”
’I needed to be safe, for my children.’ she wanted to say, but it was unnecessary adding that part.
In order to divert him from asking any questions, she quickly asked one of her own.
“How did you know I was in trouble?”
It was a burning question on her mind. How could he have possibly known that she needed help, that she was in a dire situation?
He was silent for a while, when he did reply a few seconds later, his voice was thick with mystery, “I just did.”
Perhaps he knew If he lingered, she would ask more questions, so without saying anything else he walked out of the hospital room.
He just did? What did he mean by that?
Did he just know out of the blue that she was in trouble? How, through some telepathic connection or something?
Celine sighed audibly, seeing that he was gone she saw an opportunity to sneak off. Rachel and the kids would be wondering why she hadn’t returned home yet.
She pushed herself off the bed, once she was up, the headache slowly subsided a bit.
She found her bag kept on a table at the side, she immediately picked it up. The clock on the wall showed that it was just a few minutes past two a.m in the morning, she really needed to go home.
When she got to the door she peeked outside carefully, seeing a long, white and empty hallway she was relieved to go outside with no one stopping her. She walked quickly and felt the dizziness coming back on so she slowed her pace, her bare feet making the faintest sounds against the floor tiles, she hadn’t found her shoes.
She found an elevator and instantly pressed the button, she hoped she would find a cab immediately she was out of this hospital so she could get straight home.
The elevator arrived with a sharp sound and she instantly got in, watching the doors slowly closing impatiently when all of a sudden, a hand shot through making the automatic sensors open the elevator doors again.
A tall and frightening figure was standing right outside the elevator and she hadn’t even sensed his presence at all.
“Where do you think you’re going?” His voice came out angry and stern.
